I made this meme with the Bible in mind, but you're right - people can have a general tendency to a lack of awareness of our own faults, no matter what our religion or worldview is. Thanks for the comment!

I'm honored that you use me as an example of a moral and upstanding non-believer, but I have to chuckle when I see Christians (or anyone for that matter) using themselves as the standard for moral conduct :p

If any Christian claim themselves as a standard for moral conduct, then they're not behaving as they should. Christians are only to compare themselves to Christ alone. We are only supposed to be witnesses, not judges, or lawyers. Because we fall short of the glory of God, we have no business comparing ourselves to anyone else, believer or non-believer.

You are a GREAT example bro! You accept and respect other beliefs,.. while engaging in respectful and intelligent commenting! There is an extreme to both sides for sure. There are some who label themselves Christian, as if they are the moral standard,.. while slandering anyone who does not believe as they do. Westboro Baptist comes to mind as an example,... but you understand where I am coming from. I think you are one of the most moral, respectful and tolerant persons I know,... regardless of any beliefs. I like your "asshole" comment meme!!!! LMAO!!! True that! There are dipshits on both sides of the fence! =)

As I said a few months ago, when I listen to some of the jerks on Christian radio I do get pretty heated and riled up XD I talk to people like you and spursfan and socrates in a polite, respectful manner because you guys are also polite and respectful to me :) but I'm only human, and not above getting heated when I hear something that ruffles my feathers :p

Of course you do,... so do I bro! But there is a difference in how we act out our frustration too. There are some peeps that will not respect an opinion... there's is the only one. Truth be known,.. there are Christian organizations that don't get along either,.. and not all atheist / agnostics believe exactly the same. I've even heard some satanist claim that they don't worship satan,... but themselves. I listen to some Christian programming and don't agree. I have probaly mentioned this before,... but if you had 100 baptist preachers in one room,... and gave them a page of the bible to interpret,... none would agree 100%. Some would be ready to brawl! ha ha!!!

Believers have good reason for their skepticism. Atheists are skeptical without good reason.
reply
5 ups, 3 replies
I would disagree. Atheists are skeptical of the claims of Christianity because we don't believe the evidence supports the claims made by Christians and the Bible. Similarly, you are skeptical of other religions because you don't believe the evidence supports them. A Muslim might just as easily say that you are "skeptical without good reason" when it comes to Islam.

I was taught several views of creation possibilities interpreted by those who believe the bible is the word of God. Many Christians do not believe it was 10,000 years ago and/ that (major) evolution may be true--but God did a special work with Adam & Eve. This is something that sometimes helps people to not investigate further. I believe the earth is wasaay older. Minor evolution we see all the time in nature.
reply
6 ups, 1 reply
That is true. Christians make up the whole spectrum from "evolution accounts for the diversity of all life on planet Earth and the universe is 13.7 billion years old", all the way to "the Bible is literally true and accurate in the creation story in Genesis and the universe is only 6,000 years old", to everywhere in between.

The key thing to keep in mind is that evolution on a small scale is observable all around us, and that those small changes accumulate over vast periods of time to create major changes. A fish didn't just flop onto dry land and sprout legs and start walking around, but that's the comical strawman often used to make evolution sound ridiculous.
reply

Believing the bible to be the actual word of God--there are mysteries that we just can not know exactly how he did it. The prophesies in the Old Testament about the Messiah did come true, but were not understood even by the closest disciples until after the resurrection. I believe Genesis is not meant to give us a complete run down on the details. There are obvious mysteries. I have not seen any proof scientifically of where the bible is wrong in facts, just misinterpreted. 7 "days" in Genesis (Hebrew "yom") almost certainly refers to long periods of time.

All the scientific evidence says the sun was here before the Earth, and indeed is responsible for the Earth's formation. I was just pointing out that you said you haven't seen any proof scientifically of where the Bible is wrong in facts.
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
No, I'm not disrespecting what you're saying. I tried to give some "pre-explanation" to this answer in my other comments. I think that it is not going to sound satisfactory to any side, therefore mysterious. How could plants grow before the sun was made? Moses wrote this down, and he was not so stupid as to miss that paradox. Man, I just woke up to go pee! That is a necessary question to try to answer & means you have thought about it. Right now I have to go back to sleep or else give you a sloppy answer. I prefer the former!
3 ups
I never accused you of disrespecting what I said :) whoever wrote the stories in Genesis weren't thinking that far ahead, I'm sure. They just wrote down how they thought the world got here. They didn't have the scientific tools or methods to actually study it for themselves to see if they were right.
reply
1 up, 3 replies
"All" the scientific evidence says the sun was here before the Earth?

I think you mean "none whatsoever."

If I asked you to name one piece of of scientific evidence that supports that claim, you wouldn't be able to, and nor would any other person on the planet. Story-telling isn't scientific evidence.
1 up
I continue to look at original Hebrew words & commentators. Obviously Christians know from Revelations that God himself will provide light & that he is love. The sun & stars will not be necessary then either. I wonder if a canopy over the earth was before the sun was "made" or revealed. Many people who don't seek out the truth (which takes effort & motivation) are just not interested & therefore might mock. We also know Jesus by experience, which they don't yet. I've seen literal miracles, plus healing, but especially people's lives totally changed wonderfully. Just sayin'.

reply
4 ups, 2 replies
It could be 1,000,000 vs 999,999 (or any number) and I'd still reply the same way. It's not the numbers that matter. What matters is which one is the right one and why.

To say "you can dismiss all of the claims because there are so many claimants" is still a flawed argument. It's based on a subtle form of circular reasoning, in the sense that the argument only works if you already assume it's true (it only matters that there are lots of other divine claimants if all of those claims have the same weight, which they don't).

The God of the Bible acknowledges other claimants, but denies that any of them are God.

reply
4 ups, 1 reply
That is a good, logical, answer. "Everything" or "anything" can not be true. Imagine if the hard sciences were allowed to have answers based on whatever anybody thought--such as the earth is flat... The earth can not be flat & also a sphere, at least not in our reality!
reply
1 up, 1 reply
I don't know if my answer was all that good or logical. I had trouble communicating what was in my mind.

I was trying to say that rejecting the notion of God's existence because of a high number of claimants to the title only really makes sense in a world where you're already sure that God does not exist (that's why I call it a form of circular reasoning).

If God exists, then his words have more weight, and it doesn't matter how many other claimants there are.

Thanks though.

reply
5 ups, 1 reply
It isn't scientific if it's not based on science. It's made up by man to try and disprove God.
reply
7 ups, 1 reply
It's scientific because it follows the scientific method. Science can't prove or disprove the supernatural, because science only deals with the natural world, so it's not about trying to disprove God. It's about trying to find natural explanations and causes for how the world and universe operate :)
reply
6 ups, 1 reply
I disagree. Science can also be "made up" by man or distorted to fit man's narrative. Man as a collective hates God, therefore he creates false science to "disprove" a higher power. Evolution is just a theory man created to believe in something that does not follow what the Bible tells us about God.

Oh, and I upvotes your comments. I forgot to do that. I appreciate your civility.
reply
5 ups, 2 replies
I agree that scientists are flawed and can be dishonest in their reporting of facts and evidence, but the evidence and facts themselves are what they are. You say man as a collective hates God, yet searching for God (or some higher power that may exist) is something that nearly everyone around the planet strives for, even if they reach different conclusions in the end. Evolution is a theory, in the scientific sense of the word, just as atomic theory, germ theory, cell theory, theory of relativity and theory of plate tectonics are also "theories". In science, theory does not mean a guess or conjecture. It's a well-supported explanation of a set of observed phenomena.

The same goes for you. I upvote your comments and appreciate your respectfulness as well :)

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Evidence_against_a_recent_creation

I recommend checking out this page. There are numerous scientific fields of study and discoveries that show beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Earth and universe are much older than 10,000 years. Here is a short list of that evidence (and keep in mind I haven't studied this myself, as I'm not a scientist, but if you ask a scientist they would be able to give you waaaaay more information than I ever could):

Dendrochronology
Oxidizable carbon ratio dating
Widmanstatten patterns
Mitochondrial Eve
Y-chromosomal Adam
Ice layering
Permafrost
Weathering rinds
Fission track dating
Relativistic jets
Petrified wood
Naica megacrystals
Coral
Seabed plankton layering
Cosmogenic nuclide dating
Iron-manganese nodule growth
Amino acid racemization
Stalactites
Geomagnetic reversals
Sedimentary varves
Continental drift
Impact craters
Helioseismology
Radioactive decay
Lunar recession
Distant starlight

To say the Earth is only 10,000 years old, you would have to say that *every single one of these* is at BEST flawed or incorrect, or at worst an outright lie/fabrication. That is too far-fetched for me to entertain. Upvote btw :)

I'm definitely a bible believing born again (what is generally referred to as evangelical) Christian. I have specific training in the bible & in physics. It is very difficult for many Christians to change their views on the young earth creation. I don't want to fight my fellow believers, but there is MASSIVE evidence as you showed. I just say, "well I wasn't there, so how can I know for sure." And Christians don't necessarily want to make a big deal out of it with other. We all believe God created the earth in 7 time periods, so to speak.

Thanks for the providing the list. I have to admit that at first sight it looks like good support for the claim that you made above that "the overwhelming scientific evidence" points to the planet having been around for longer than 10,000 years.

I don't believe your claim that any one them, or all of them taken together, show "beyond a shadow of a doubt" that the Earth and universe are older than about 10,000 years. I believe that's attributing a level of certainty to the conclusions that isn't warranted by the nature of the case.

I don't know much about the beliefs of the Westboro Baptist Church, but on the surface at least, they don't seem to be much concerned with offering God's grace to sinners. Their theology seems to be one of "works" (ie, being good - or at least what they think of as good), rather than seeing salvation as the free gift of God.

So while there might be a superficial similarity (e.g. because the WBC also uses words like "sinners") the intent behind the words is different.

I believe sin is real, and very serious, but also that the main purpose of telling people they are sinners is so that they will see their genuine need for God. I also believe I'm in that same category as everyone else - a sinner in need of grace - whereas WBC come across to me as if they're saying other people are sinners, and very bad ones, but that they themselves aren't (or at least not as bad as other sinners).
reply
5 ups
From what I've heard, they fall into the category of hyper-Calvinist, i.e. that they and they alone are truly saved, and anyone outside their particular church or extremely narrow view of Christianity (which would be about 99%+ of all Christians everywhere) is unsaved and headed for Hell
reply

I appreciate you standing up for me. It's kind of you.

However, if you think about the context of the OP meme, it leads to the conclusion that we're "all" in the same ballpark, where sin is concerned.

We think of Westboro Baptist Church as being in the wrong (and rightly so, I believe), because of how they treat people.

But our wrongdoing against God is far more serious than the wrongdoing of WBC against society or other people. I believe that applies to all of us, so even though I think what the WBC is doing is wrong, I'm not in a position to say I'm much better (at least not where my position with God is concerned).
