I don't know, I always question that! For example, when I have over 1,000 views for a meme but only like 16 upvotes for the meme... I just get so confused.
Because those that ask usually get upvotes if they are either a top user or if they have done several similar memes asking for upvotes. For example, if a top user like the top 5 ask for upvotes, they'd get it. That would leave the others having to make several memes in order to get enough upvotes to advance to the next rank or era. That's just what i think.
When I first joined imgflip, I was kinda obsessed with points etc. It was only when I decided to loosen up and just have fun that I actually started getting lots of upvotes.
Go figure.

You're right. When you're to the point of obsessing about your upvotes and planning your submissions before you go to sleep, it's time to take a few steps back and rethink what's important.

FINALLY! It's about damn time I made another front page meme! It's also about damn time I made it back on the Top 100 Users list. I give my thanks to all of you wonderful people! I was getting worried that I'd never see the light of the front page again. Whew! :D

At least you can get memes on the front page that contain words. Mine have to be blank to make it. :-)

Honestly. The moderators could take my points and redistribute them to whom ever they see fit and I couldn't care less. Just interacting with people on the site is enough.
People take this site way too seriously. Make a meme, go on with your life, come back and make another meme , repeat. It's not about getting points or making front page. It is about being creative and enjoying your creation.
