I believe shop owners should have the right to protect their property. We would do the same for our own property. I also believe police should be given more power to diffuse the situation. But times are different so shooting looters would put blm on your doorstep and you'd have a long legal battle and possibly jail time until proven innocent. Need a different justice system to make it work.

Good character can be up to interpretation, I know a few real asshole people , but they are all helluva bunch of good Patriots. They also know what needs to be done in certain situations, sometimes people with "good character " don't have the stomach for the deed.
To be honest I don't know what I'd actually do. I know of three possibilities -

2) Do pull the trigger.

In my entire life I had to pull my weapon 4 times, and everytime I was willing to pull the trigger if the situation didn't improve and the criminal element didn't retreat from my sight. I think living on the South side fo Chicago has forced me to make peace with ending someone's life if I absolutely had to, the crime is just too bad to play good guy.

Never do that, the moment you leave a criminal alive after you were forced to shoot leaves you open to a million different lawsuits. A lawyer will come up with a 1000 different situations that makes the p.o.s an innocent victim. If you ever are forced to shoot always shoot to kill.
Good stuff, In IL I have heard too many stories that ended with a victim of a home invasion being sued by the criminal after claiming "they were lost" or " I just needed a drink of water and that white man shot me" - Civil court is a bitch, and expensive. I am a member of the USCCA, it is an insurance that covers civil suits in case of a shooting and the criminal survives.
