Teotihuacan is now known as Mexico City. | The Aztec have a mysterious origin. Their mythic homeland was Aztlán. What was Aztlán? They describe it as an land surrounded by water far to the North. Also: their mythology includes people with pale skin and hair growing on their face, indicating contact with white people at some point. When they came to Central Mexico they believed they had found their new Aztlán & so they build their Capital City Teotihuacan, but not on the land. They built it in the middle of a lake because according to them that's what the capital of Aztlán was like -- & somehow they actually had the technical knowledge to successfully build the city on the lake! There is a place some Europeans wrote about, a powerful island nation with a capital city that had water running through it, destroyed by geologic forces long ago. The modern use of "Aztec" was coined by a Prussian Scholar in 1810, and derives from a term meaning "people from Aztlán.
