I work for a non profit that feeds the homeless.. Two sides to that issue.. One, I live in portland, which is a city that basically caters to the homeless and as a result we have some very entitled homeless people here. On the other hand.. A lot of reasons someone might not want pepperoni. Dietary restrictions are a possibility, the homeless don't always have fantastic gastrointestinal health. Or they might be vegetarian, I know some really nice homeless people that don't eat meat. I dunno what it's like where you live, but people tend to give food out a lot here because it's infinitely preferable to handing them cash so.. It may just be that they weren't that hungry. There are programs to get people back on their feet here but the waiting list for housing can be over a year and many of the local shelters have strange religious policies to the point where they leave the homeless worse off than they were before they went in. A lot of those people are mentally ill as well and need medication but they can be difficult to identify, shepherd into a clinic and treat.. And, as one of my favorite songs says "when you come to apply for the job, don't tell them that you're homeless, because I promise they won't hire you".. Once you're down in this country, it can be very difficult to get back up, especially in a city as overrun with drugs and as deep a homeless subculture as portland.
