If users want Private Messaging then we should let them know!

Too much risk for harassment. I left facebook for here because its anonymous and harassment is difficult. Let's keep it that way.

Here are two possible cons:

1. People using it to "gang up" against other users by making plans to harass them, etc. You can do that now by commenting on older memes, but it would make it easier.

2. I don't know if that would be a good idea for some of the younger users on this site (they'd be chatting to people when they really don't know anything about their intentions).

Good comment! Where there are good intentions,... bad peeps take advantage! It's unfortunate! The CTS would be busy,... It would be good for users to network. I didn't give much thought to the damage the trolls could do though,... or just bad users in general.

Maybe have it where you have to earn a certain amount of points to unlock the private messaging, sort of like with the comments. That way, it gives the user time to get a feel on the people they want to talk to

Yeah, I'm sure there's ways to do it, if they wanted to. You could also have ways to block message requests from specific users, maybe.

I realize it's not for everyone and I'm sure there would be settings to control PM for those that don't intend to use it (like facebook & other social media) or to limit who can send messages to you. Thanks for weighing in :)

Just type "whisper" before your comment and everyone will go past it.

Just make sure to put "deactivate whisper" in the title of your memes after that, otherwise people will scroll past them and ignore them.

Lol!!! Consider me "schooled!" And judging by the comments and lack of interest, apparently there is a reason that imgflip doesn't already have private messaging... :)

I think it would be great if done correctly. Maybe you could have an option to "friend" people or a group of people with common likes have a certain page.

Also I think it's too early to conclude that there's a lack of interest. Thirteen upvotes for a few hundred views is actually a pretty good ratio.

Nobody has followed your specific instruction yet to put in an "X all the Y" template as a positive vote, but that could just be because people aren't good at following instructions.

There may be people who would be eager to use messaging on imgflip if it existed, but don't really want to be bothered to do much about it if it isn't there.

Has anybody tried making the meme private and then sharing the link? Not sure if that would work, I've noticed sometimes commenting on a friends meme that is in submission but not featured that the comments don't show up on my home page. Maybe there is something to that we could exploit for more private conversations idk just a thought...

Maybe, but would that work in other circumstances, say if you or they were out of submissions or didn't want to burn a submission for a private comment/conversation?

True that's why I mentioned the private meme, I have never clicked that box but wonder if I made one and gave the link to somebody if their comments would be private also. You would have to delete the link after they got it I guess, just spit balling ideas here no idea if it will work but I'll try it out and see.

Private messaging isn't a bad idea, I just don't think they should fix something that isn't broken. It's not always a horrible thing that it's not possible to talk behind somebodies back on this site. Keeps people respectful to a certain extent.

People are going to talk behind someone's back one way or the other. And if they're not being respectful imgflip's TOS should already outline what they will do to handle it. I think some of the value in PM would be to share ideas or whatever personal things that two (or even a group) of people wish to without it being out there for the whole world to see.

True, I'm not against the idea, there are a lot of times I wish for it, Just not sure how it will effect the rest of the site. I've seen upgrades completely ruin sites I really liked before. If they can do it and the server can handle it then great.

What about using e-mails? I knows have at least one that I don't really use. It may be a way to group share something that doesn't get featured?

Yeah and there are free messaging apps like kik. Used to use that on a game I played a while back. I know there have been concerns about trolls using it to team up on people. I don't so much worry about that so much as the website adding something that could cause it to slow down. I know I'm not the only one to have comments take forever to post sometimes and even upvotes not staying on a meme I've liked. I just wouldn't want the site to suffer from running too much traffic, I can't even comment as fast as I want right now and get that damn you're commenting a lot message far too often as it is lol ;)

I'm seeing a number of memes pointing out the imgflip is now running ads. Why the hell shouldn't they be able to monetize all their hard work in making a great site??? Maybe now that the cash register is beginning to ring, it may allow them to make whatever improvements to the site that they and their users want.

They've been doing that since I started. If people don't like it they can get the pay version and there won't be any on their memes it's stated quite clearly. Doesn't bother me at all they have to make money to keep all this going somehow. The guy that made this site is a genius and deserves something out of it!

It's a lot of work for imgflip, and brings more consideration such as the storage of the messages, etc., and potential liability / legal issues. But to avoid some of the work, maybe they can simply integrate some kind of external messaging service (e.g. chat), or have a simple e-mail message relay like Craigslist that hides the real email address. It would be a nice addition.

you go to your followed users, click on somebody and if they also follow you it will show a little mail icon, when you click on that you can start messaging them :P

They have it now and you can also block people if needed! :)
