But what is the secret in getting memes onto the front page?

I don't really know if there is a "secret." Basically people have to see your meme and like it. But it's hard to say for sure what will be popular with people from one day to the next. Some memes take off and some don't, even when they seem similar in quality.

Oh, okay. By the way, I noticed that doge memes have gone down since I started imgflip. Maybe avoid doge memes if you want to go on the front page?

If you'll notice on their profiles, Entertainer28 has been on this site longer than Raydog, but Raydog has a lot more points in a shorter amount of time. It won't be long before Raydog catches him in points.
