On a collective level, people need to have children so that civilization keeps moving forward. But on an individual level, not everyone can or should be a parent, even though Hollywood wants you to believe otherwise.
One of Hollywood's favorite tropes is to turn child-haters into child-lovers, regardless of how unrealistic the transformation is. ("Dennis the Menace" (1993) is the most bizarre example of this. Watch the movie and you'll understand.) They do this for a reason, though. They know that families with children are the most likely to see movies in a theater. It doesn't matter to them if those children are complete geniuses or total fools, blessings or burdens, goody-goodies or dangerous psychopaths. But how children turn out should matter to the rest of us. And I can understand people not wanting to have kids because they don't want to bring the next hopeless druggie or criminal mastermind into the world, especially now that parents can be punished when their children break the law.
