Never told in the 20th and 21st Centuries because it clarifies the Christian heritage of the founding and undermines the communist narrative. The Pilgrims nearly starved to death, until Bradford got rid of the socialist guidelines and granted private ownership of land and the products of labor, so that a man could specialize and trade for his needs- in essence the beginning of capitalism. The story of Squanto and native involvement has been distorted through the 20th and 21st centuries as well. An entertaining and little known fact is that Squanto spoke excellent English since he had been conscripted/Shanghaied by an English fishing boat for a number of years. When he entered the settlement, he went directly to the meeting house as English culture required, wearing only a breech cloth.
Read "The Light and the Glory" by Peter Marshall and David Manuel, which draws heavily from the writings of William Bradford, governor of Plymouth Colony, MA. The Pilgrims charter was to colonize northern Virginia, whose northern border at the time extended up to what is now New York. Their intent was to colonize somewhere on the Hudson River, but shoals prevented passage and they ended up in Massachusetts instead. You can read copies of the original manuscripts, but old typesets and archaic spellings can be difficult to navigate.
All of this has been distorted by a well defined communist party plan. While several of the published communist 45 goals apply, such as goals 17, 22, 27, 30, Goal 31 spells it out best. Goal 31-Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
Football had nothing to do with Thanksgiving declared first by Bradford, another time by Samuel Adams, then George Washington and eventually our national holiday declared by Abraham Lincoln.
