Back in the day immigrants did their best to speak English in public, erarely speaking their native language outside the home. That doesn’t happen anymore.

I had one person at work comment that the immigrants of the same ethnicity treated him badly when they found out he spoke English as well as their native tongue.

Back in the day teachers would beat or kill you if you even tried to speak the native American language you were accustomed to outside of assimilation school. And it was the government who convinced tribal people to place their kids into school. In order to rid the savage and assimulat. The government even gave tickets to families to move from their tribal lands and live in the city. Many didn't make it.
