Public Enemy chapter 5: Firestarter

After waiting a long while, Matt stares at a crowd of people wanting him dead. He leans into Orobas and yells into the mic.
Matt: Alright, which one of you is the leader?
From the crowd, the demon princess steps out from them and whips out her chains. She stares at Matt in pure disgust as he claps his hands i amusement
Matt: So… this is the famous Shuri… You got some guts. Using some duplicity against me, turning almost all of my friends into my enemies… you made a name for yourself!
He says pointing Orobas at her with a confident smirk on his face.
Matt: But I’ll forget it once I leave this battlefield
Shuri bursts into flames with pure anger but regains her composure and fluffs her hair. She then smiles a bit and does a little twirl before bowing.
Shuri: It’s an honor to meet you as well, Matt Kingsman. But we all know you’ll be dead the moment the dust settles… So tell me, shall I have this dance?
Matt: A dance huh?
He says dusting off his jacket in amusement.
Matt: Alright. Let's see if you can keep up with my tempo.
Shuri: Alright! Everyone! Get him!
The crowd lets out a battle cry as they rush towards Matt with the desire to kill. He stands there, waiting for them to reach him with a cheeky smile on his face. The first to attack was none other than Violet, who was thinking of beating him the same way she did last time. She goes in for a stab but Matt blocks the attack and pushes her away.
Matt: Hey after this is over, want to go out for dinner?
Violet: H-huh? Well… I’ll admit that sounds nice- Waitaminute I’m supposed to be your enemy!
She says slashing at him again. Matt kicks her away and then turns around, blocking an attack from Amber.
Matt: You too, huh?
He says going into the defensive, dodging the attacks from her lance, getting cut in the wrist in the process.
Amber: If I could just…
She says reaching for his soul while his back is turned… however on contact, Amber is immediately flung into a building. Recovering, she grasps her head, breathing heavily, sweat trickling down her forehead.
Amber: What was that…? I just touched his soul for a second and I suddenly felt fear like no other… wait… why was I fighting Matt? I should tell Fox about this…
She flew upwards and zoomed off to the underworld to Shuri’s disappointment.
Shuri: Never let an Angel do a devil's job, I guess…

Matt takes some time to catch his breath until a blast from above nearly hits him. He looks up and sees a pink robot with a blank expression next to that robot who tried to kill that pink haired girl who worked in Scarab.
Matt: Oh, there you guys were! I was wondering when you'd show up.
CTRL stared at Matt and held out his hand, signaling Soul to fire. Soul aimed her arm cannon and started blasting away at Matt, who quickly dodged the attacks and ran up to them. However, chains suddenly bind around his arms and legs, making him fall to the ground. He turns his head and sees Venus, holding her hand out towards Matt, trying to keep him still.
Venus: Now, Soul! Take the shot!
Soul charged up a huge shot, using most of her energy in order to create a huge blast… Matt tries to break free of his chains and thinks to himself, “shit… if that charge gets any bigger I won't be able to dodge…” he gets back up on his feet and continues to to struggle as the blast gets bigger and bigger… meanwhile, Fox was sitting by his bed staring at the empty jar that once held the fragments of Angels soul… he stood there quietly thinking about why he was such a magnet for misfortune… until he hears a familiar voice talking to him.
???: don't be afraid, my friend…
Fox: great… Now I'm hearing things…
???: this is no hallucination… nor are you crazy…
Fox turns around and sees a grey transparent figure standing there with her hair tied back and a warm smile on her face. She held up her hand and waved to him as his eyes widened.
Fox: your-
Angel: Hi-ho! How are you doing, Fox?
Back at the fight, Matt finally regained his balance as breaks free from Venus’ chains, causing her to fall to the ground out of exhaustion.
Matt: Hey, not bad! You actually held me longer this time… too bad you're trying to kill me…
He says before turning back and noticing the huge energy blast from Soul. “Oh right… that…” he thought to himself. He can't dodge in time… what the hell is he supposed to do?
Matt: Gotta risk it!
He says pulling his hands up in an x formation, ready to block the attack. The blast completely engulfs Matt, seemingly killing him… but a loud clang is heard. For a split second, a red barrier blocked the attack. Matt opened his eyes and noticed his hands were glowing red and black. CTRL stares at him from afar and turns to Soul.
CTRL: Failure. Shoot him again
Soul: Yes, Leader.

Soul fires a quick shot, but Matt turns around and blocks it again, the red barrier appearing once again… this time the sound was different… like he did something correctly. The red aura around his hands seems to glow brighter than before… Soul fires one last time as Matt punches it. The sound of distorted glass breaking is created as he dashes straight through the building with such force, causing it to crash down with the robots on it. Matt stares at his hand in awe. The light was gone but he had a better understanding of his new power now… suddenly from the debris, spikes made out of pure blood shoot out of the ground. The building splits in half as a demonic figure points at Matt.
Saike: You… You harmed my daughter.
Matt: What? I didn't even see Rose this entire time…
He didn't seem to be in the mood for idle chatter as he rushed in. Matt puts his hands back in an x formation to block the attack, but he cuts straight through it with the red barrier breaking on impact. Saike continues his onslaught by cutting in his chest, flipping over and slashing from above, and then rapidly attacking with a flurry of slashes, followed by a strike sending him straight in the air. Once he was midair, the blood from his cut spilled out of him and turned into a thousand spikes surrounding him. Saike turned away from Matt and clenched his fist as the spikes all flew towards him. Matt tries to defend himself by slashing the spikes away from him but multiple spikes from behind stop him from completely defending himself, causing him to fall on his knees. Matt used Orobas as support to get up and dusted himself. This was gonna be tough… Back at the underworld, Fox was still coming to terms with what he was seeing. The woman whose soul was shattered was back?
Angel: You look surprised. Are you feeling well? Did you get good sleep?
Fox stayed silent and ignored her attempts at banter. He simply pointed and started questioning
Fox: How are you back? Your soul has been completely shattered beyond repair.
Angel's smile faded a little and pointed at his chest.
Angel: You didn't look at your soul, did you?
Fox looked down at his chest and checked his soul. It was the usual orange colored orb however with grey shards being stuck in from all sides, making it look like a crystalized sun. Fox looked back up and put the pieces together.
Fox: So that's what Persephone meant when I'd find out soon enough…
Angel: Yep! You're not getting rid of me that easily!

She says smiling with joy. Fox however did not change his expression and simply went back to sitting down on his bed.
Angel: Hey what's wrong? You used to love banter like this!
She says sitting down next to him. Fox glanced back and sighed
Fox: you're uh… different. You're not acting like you usually do.
Angel: probably because of your influence, since our souls have merged. But come on! Cheer up a little! I'm back alright?
Fox doesn't even look back and stares down at his feet. Suddenly they both heard telling from outside
Amber: Fox! Something big happened!
Fox walks out nonchalantly with Angel following after. Outside, Amber landed in front of the entrance and explained everything that happened, from the fight, to contact with the soul, and regaining her memories.
Fox: Hm… so he's the key… alright thank you Amber I'll see what I can do.
Amber: No problem. Best of luck, you two
She says flying off. Once out of sight, Fox turns around and walks back to his room. Angel runs after him and grabs his arm
Angel: Hey! Where are you going?
Fox: to sleep. This situation will deal with itself.
Angel: no it wouldn't! Come on!
Angel continued to try and convince him on and on as Fox went on with his daily routine. Back at the fight, Matt and Saike were in the middle of a clash until something catches his attention from behind. A meteorite made of pure crystal was heading his way. Once he nearly made contact with him, Matt put Ares armor onto his feet and dashed to a safe area, Leaving Saike to get hit by the attack.
Saike: What the- Hey watch where you’re aiming!
He says barely dodging the attack. When he landed on the ground, he looked in horror as his leg was completely frozen.
Saike: See? I had him right where I wanted to!
???: Oh calm down, will you?
A man says as they place their hand on Saike’s shoulder, reverting the leg back to normal. He looked up to see a man with brown hair and a cape.
Saike: Oh! You’re the… the guy?
The boss: It’s “The boss”, thank you very much. And you’re welcome to help.
Saike looked back up and turned to where Matt once was.
Saike: Hey… if you could rewind myself back to my previous state, why can’t you rewind Matt back here?
The boss: …I’m not quite sure… you saw it too didn’t you?
Saike: Yeah… I couldn’t use color eye…
The boss: They don’t seem bound by the laws of fate… why is this so familiar…?
He then turns his attention to a boy with headphones running towards him.
The Boss: Spark. Where is the terrorist now?

Spark: He’s uh… he’s hiding somewhere… but someone’s on the job looking for him! He’ll take it from here!
The Boss glances at Matt, and then back to Mercury and Saike
The Boss: You heard him. Let's wait for the results, shall we? And if he fails, we’ll simply come back.
He says walking off as Saike and Mercury follow after. Meanwhile, Matt was hiding behind a broken building catching his breath… He pieces together what he knows about his new ability… Looks like if he doesn’t block perfectly, it’ll break after some time… but his thoughts are interrupted by the sound of electricity zapping from a broken powerline… and out jumps Boltam, who tries to grab Matt and drag him into the wire.
Boltam: I won’t let you hurt anyone again!
Matt: Oh! You’re that weird yellow smiling thing!
He says punching him out of his grasp. Boltam grumbled to himself and went back into the powerline and traveled downwards. Matt took out Orobas and placed the tip on the blade on the floor, circling around in place, and cutting a hole that he fell into in order to catch up to Boltam. Once he made it down, all he saw was an average subway station… Matt gripped Orobas tightly and looked around… a light flickers behind him until suddenly, Boltam appears and punches him, and then zapping away in a blink of an eye. “Damn it… he’s fast…” Matt thought to himself, “Not overwhelmingly fast but this station makes it easy for him to get away before I can counter…” Another punch to the back of the head followed. Matt turned around to attack but he hit nothing… and then another… He was getting annoyed at how he couldn't react fast enough. “It’s like a single punch was just too slow… Damn it, calm down, Matt!” He thinks to himself, slapping himself on his cheeks. “Think think think… if I can hit him… I’ll just have to hit… everything…” He took a deep breath and closed his eyes… the sound of wind breezing past him from the open crater he made… “Steady… steady…” Boltam appears behind him for a punch but before the attack can land, Matt eyes shoot open with a deadpan expression on his face. “Now.” A burst of red energy erupts from him, causing Boltam, and the entire station to explode out into the surface. While midair, Boltam is grabbed by Matt and slammed into the ground, where the remaining enemies were waiting… Spark looked worried and turned to Shuri.
Spark: What the hell is that?! This power is something else!
He says watching Matt fight off the horde of former allies.

Spark: Please tell me you have a plan, Shuri! PLEASE!
Shuri smiled a little and patted him on the head and walked towards Matt, stepping on the bodies of the unconscious… in her mind a voice ringed in her head… a recollection of the words her father told her…
Satan: Listen to me Shuri… In Numbaria, there were instances where this form Kingsman has faltered… and it’s when emotion is shown. I have a plan in case this ever happens. Try telling him what happened to the sapien girl his father helped a long time ago…
Behind a building, Eren was texting her dad, trying to get an answer to help out while Matt fought off the army until he was hit by a chain from behind. Matt turned around as Shuri held up her hands to signal everyone to stop fighting.
Shuri: You know… I haven’t had this much fun in a while! The last time I did was when I watched that doctor cry over that girl.
Matt’s eyes widened as Eren peaked around the corner with the same amount of surprise as her friend.
Matt and Eren: …what?
Shuri: Oh did that ring a bell? Well let me tell you a story! There was this girl your father saved from an invasion we had a whiiiile back. And the girl was sick. Like, very sick. Couldn’t see out of any of her eyes. So your father, being the “nice” person he is, gave her the money in order for her to have surgery on her eyes! The doctor had a strong bond with her too, but that's not important for now. So, on that day… I decided to pay the hospital a visit! I snuck into the operating room and replaced the scalpels with ones I laced with lead! Then I pretended to be a surgeon and watched the whole thing unfold… It was quite funny seeing the doctors tell her everything is going to be okay when it really wasn’t… uh… what was the girl's name again? I have so many victims I sometimes forget them… Uh… Kako? Kie ko?
Matt: …Kiko?
Shuri: Yeah! Her! I knew it was something with a K!
She says laughing a bit. The aura around Matt began to flicker as his clenched his fists.
Matt: And what about the doctor…?
Shuri: Oh that poor gal? Oh she took the blame for everything! I didn’t even planned that, but who cares? It’s just another sapien by the end of the day…
He then lunged forward at Shuri and grabbed her throat, slamming her into a building with the shattered glass falling on top of them.
Shuri: ooh feisty boy~
Matt: You LITTLE SHIT!! YOU RUINED TWO PEOPLES FUTURES AT ONCE! AND YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST LAUGH IT OFF LIKE THAT?!

He yells as She giggles a little. She then held up her arms and tilt her head to the side, making herself look like just a harmless girl.
Shuri: Oh come on… It’s not like you haven’t killed anyone either! And you know whats the best part? Her last words were hilarious! Wanna know what they were?
Shuri leaned forward next to Matt's ear and whispered.
“It’s a cruel cruel world…”
Matt loses it. He raises his fist up in order to base Shuri’s head in until… he stopped feeling it. He couldn’t move any part of his body. Blood suddenly shot out of his back like a timebomb was inside of him. He fell backwards, dropping Orobas as everyone around him cheered. Shuri laughed and held her hands up to everyone.
Shuri: And here lies Kingsman! No one will weep for him, no one will feel sorry! his story ends today!
The crowd roars as Violet, Spark, and Mercury applaud together.
Spark: Isn’t it great? He’s close to death! Your daughters will be protected! You no longer have to fear this man trying to harm you anymore!
Violet: Yes… Yes I guess that's true… but…
She puts her hand next to her cheek as Spark and Mercury notice her somber expression
Violet: ..Why am I crying?
Back in the underworld, Fox is trying to sleep while Angel annoys him.
Angel: Come on! Your daughter needs you! Matt needs you!
Fox: No they don’t. They can handle it themselves. I told you this and I can say it a million times more.
He says getting up to get some tea as Angel follows closely behind.
Angel: Look, just because you’re in this phase, doesn’t mean you can neglect your friends and family!
Fox: I’m not neglecting them. I simply think that they can finish the job themselves.
Angel: Oh so you’re just going to run away?
Fox stops walking as Angel stands behind him. She looks like she’s about to cry due to how angry she is
Angel: I didn’t take you for being a coward! I thought when I got back, you’d be happy to see me, but noooo! I guess I should have stayed dead and let you drown in your own self pity! And now you refuse to go and save your-

“What the f**k do you expect me to do?” Fox says quietly. Angel stops talking as Fox clenches his fist and slams it on the table, turning around. “YOU KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LOSE EVERYONE YOU LOVE ALL BECAUSE OF YOUR MISTAKES?! LAURA, GONE BECAUSE I DECIDED I WANTED TO BE A FATHER, LEWIS, DEAD JUST BECAUSE I WASN’T THERE TO SUPPORT HIM AT HIS LOWEST! VICTORIA, MURDERED BECAUSE I DIDN’T WATCH HER! YOU, ALL BECAUSE MY DUMBASS DECIDED I WASN’T SCARED TO ASK FOR HELP ANYMORE!” He says sitting down beside the table “YES, I’M A COWARD, BUT WHY SHOULDN’T I BE? EVERY ACTION I DO, SOMEONE I KNOW IS GOING TO GET HURT! WHAT HAPPENS IF I GO THERE? WILL EREN DIE BEING STRANGLED TO DEATH? WILL MATT DIE, MAKING ME A BAD FRIEND TO LEWIS? ANGEL, I AM THE MAN THAT WATCHED THE WORLD BURN!” He says holding his hands up, trying his best to hold it together “And that's all I ever will be!” Angel covers her mouth with her eyes welling up with tears as Fox curls up into a ball in the corner of the table… she’s never seen him so vulnerable… She walks up, sits down next to him, and hugs him tightly.
Angel: Listen I’m sorry-
Fox: No no… save your apologies… That was… out of character for me. Good thing Hades and Persephone didn’t hear any of that…
Fox then notices his phone buzzing on the table and takes a look at it. Multiple texts from Eren… He unlocks his phone and starts scrolling though

“LMAO Matt’s got a plan!!!!! You gotta see this, dad1!!1!!! XD”
“Come on! Where are you?!!?!?!? It’s about to start!!1!! :D”
“Dad are you there?!?!?!? You’re not answering!!!!!!!!111! :(“
“Hey Dad. I just wanted to ask you something. Why don’t you smile like you used to anymore? I remember when even at the lowest moments in our adventures, you’d still look forward, smiling and laughing, even when the situation looked grim. You’d always keep going and we’d make it out because of you. But now, it looks like you don’t do that anymore. You barely smile when you see me too. Did I do something wrong? I have no guarantee that you’d even see this but, I miss my dad. The one that smiled in the face of danger. The one that cheered me up. The one that taught me everything I know as a person. I wish I could see him again. That's my only desire.”
Fox stared at the text as teardrops fell onto his phone… he ducked down to hide his expression as Angel got up to look for something… after a while, Fox felt something familiar in his head. He looked up to see Angel placing his hat on top of his head.

Angel: …You ready to make someone smile?
Fox looked up at her for a little before a familiar, confidant smirk appeared on his face.
Fox: Yeah…
He gets up and grabs his gun, reloading the barrel and placing it in his pocket.
Fox: I’m gonna be better.
Back in the fight, Shuri was stabbing Matt over and over with Orobas, with a manic smile on her face. Eren holds Confetti tightly to cover the poor. confused pomeranian’s eyes.
Shuri: Why won’t you die already! You have nothing else to live for!
She says stabbing him in the hand… but the blade suddenly disappeared in a bright red light… Shuri, unfazed, took out her chain and started strangling Matt with it as he kept fighting back.
Shuri: Come on! Give up already! The audience is waiting!
Matt stared into the crowd and noticed everyone cheering for his death… Saike, Boltam, The Boss, Spark, Mercury, Venus, …Violet…, and so many more people… until he finally spoke up.
Matt: No… more… I give up… I can’t fight you anymore…
Shuri smiles confidently to herself and pat her on the head as she lets go, making him fall to the ground.
Shuri: Good. Now we’ll just wait until you bleed out…
She says walking away… but in the audience, Spark, Mercury, and Violet feel something heavy weigh in their hearts…
Spark: …I feel like… something terrible is about to happen…
Shuri: Oh calm down, Spark. He said he gave up, right?
Matt turned to Shuri weakly as his face twisted into a demented smile.
Matt: I… wasn’t talking… to you…
His pupils disappear as a red light erupts from his body, causing everyone to shield their eyes… but Spark, Violet, and Mercury watched in horror…
Spark: I… I remember! Matt is our friend! What the hell did we do to him?! And why are we-
Violet: …Spark? It’s too late to ask questions… He’s here.
From inside the red light, a hand is raised as a spear forms. The hand grabs the spear as it lands down into the battlefield. Everyone subconsciously kneels towards the figure in the light, who turns to Shuri. His red hair flowing from the wind until it stops and smiles at Shuri…
Ares: It’s been a long time… Shuri.
