It is not my fault OP ruined the go to answer of "The parties switched" when it comes to defend that the Democrats fought to keep slavery.

The Party's did switch.

Ike's 1956 REPUBLICAN Campaign Platform.

He beat Adlai Stevenson II in 1952 and again in 1956 with over
400 electoral votes in each election.

1. Provide federal assistance to low-income families.
2. Protect Social Security.
3. Provide asylum for refugees.
4. Extend minimum wage.
5. Improve unemployment benefits so it covers more people
6. Strengthen labor laws so workers can easily join a union.
7. Assure equal pay for equal work regardless of sex.

Republican voters overwhelmingly agreed with him. But that was back
in the day when they were still the Liberal Party.

The Republican Party was the Liberal Party into the 1960's.
Today's GOP hates Ike's platform.

Really??
A Republican President waged a war to preserve the Union.
Democrats fought to end the Union.
A Republican President ended slavery.
The Democrats fought to preserve.
I really don’t think you know anything about history, now do you?

Democrats were the Conservative Party during the Civil war.
And, yes.... they were wrong.

He was not a “liberal” in the least. He was no a conservative, striving to conserve the Union.
Slavery was an ancillary issue.
“ My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union”

Abraham Lincoln is often viewed as a classical liberal, advocating for individual rights and a government that supports the common good, particularly in his opposition to slavery and his belief in self-governance. His policies and political philosophy have led many to consider him a progressive figure in American history.

The Four Factions of Lincoln’s Era: The Whig/Republicans, the “Know-Nothing” Constitutional Union, the Southern Democrats, and the Free Soil Party
This will make more sense if we consider the four factions of Lincoln’s era explicitly, they were:

The Northern liberal Whig/Republicans,
The Nativist Know-Nothing [sometimes] allies of the Whig/Republicans,
The Southern Democrats and their Northern allies (who supported slavery), and
The Free Soil [sometimes] allies of the Democrats who took a “libertarian” like position.

Lincoln wanted to maintain slavery.
Lincoln wanted to deport all former slaves.

Bismarck did not want to give Germany social healthcare.

But yet Lincoln ended slavery in the USA and Bismarck gave Germany social healthcare

Lincoln did not end slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was toothless, and he knew it. At most he figured he'd get some run away slaves willing to volunteer for the Union AKA North
