Because a lot of people -- especially the less-than-cool ones who think announcing their babies' XX or XY chromosomes is the most important thing -- confuse gender (which is a social thing) with sex (which is a biological thing, and, btw, more complicated than just the chromosomes.)

This is a little imprecise. X & Y chromosomes, often but not often enough to be reliable, correlate with masculine gender (which is a social construct). They are PART (but not all) of the biological suite of events that determine sex.
