I think things worked out better with Japan than with recent attempts like Iraq and Afghanistan. The difference is that we got an unconditional surrender out of them. Also the US at the time let Japan choose their own form of government as long it wasn't 'God Emperor' which caused the whole thing in the first place.

Unfortunately in the present Japan's Diet(Legislators) tends to be as corrupt and/or useless as the US legislative branch(hopefully that will change in the next few months when new members are sworn in). Probably one of the reasons why Trump and Abe got along. IMO, they both underestimated their country's Swamp. It cost Trump his previous shot at a second term and got Abe assassinated.

We all know the deep state will not go down without a fight, they will learn how weak the really are, it will just take time.
