That means you are normal. You don’t have to be an insane fascist to be left of center. Don’t let them fool you.

Education shouldn't be cut for f**k sake not rocket science

I think all schools should be privatized. If parents have to pay something for their kids’ education maybe they will actually give a crap about ensuring they learn, which includes not acting out in class, in which case they actually might learn something.

And for parents who can’t afford education?

Don’t even try to use the “School Voucher” argument, we both know they do nothing to make private schools affordable

If the vouchers cover everything and the schools don't know who they are getting money from it would work.

Good luck convincing our government, especially with this conservative wave, to provide a full ride to a private sector institution.

After all, that would be like socialism, no?

So why was our educational system so much better before the DOE was founded?

What are your standards for “better”? Are we talking about how many students graduate per year? The quality of the education they receive (and how do we measure quality)? What students are allowed to even receive an education?

Seriously? You couldn’t just answer the question? sigh…. Pick three, pick five, pick any that you’d like.

Anecdotally, I can tell you that I see far too many kids coming out of high school and college, completely unprepared to deal with joining the workforce.

“What students are allowed to even receive an education?”

Do you have an assertion to make with that statement? Who is being denied access to a public education?

People have been before the department of education was founded. So if you’re going to say education was better without it, we’re going to have to cover all angles.

If it's for people that can't afford it, I think it'll work. What would work better would be a citizen veto, via picking which taxes you pay when you file your taxes each year. You have to pick x amount based on your income, but you choose where it goes and how its used.

You know what, as unrealistic as it would be, I actually like that idea. I think it’s worth discussion.

I think it’s cool in that it essentially allows citizens themselves to vote on what tax dollars are spent on, which fits in the individualistic nature of modern American culture. However, I think it has a potential shortcoming in that it could possibly lead to essential services being underfunded. And of course, it’s unlikely to ever gain traction in congress because it could mean their paychecks get a slash when many citizens would rather fund schools and their local fire departments instead of filling the overstuffed pocketbooks of them.

But overall, sounds like a fun idea to workshop

What would be considered essential services exactly?

In my opinion, that would include law enforcement, public schools, road construction and repair, sewage, utilities, and things along those lines.

Nah, public schools wouldn't be on that list because parents can homeschool, charter school, or private school. Everything else on that list is would agree with. Basically any thing that can only really be done by government. Maybe you would have to pay essential taxes, but then you choose the rest.

I can see that. However, with your proposal of school vouchers, what happens if not enough people pay the taxes to fund those vouchers and/or not enough people pay a public school funding tax? Would we be willing to potentially let kids slip between the cracks with no formal education?

Yes, if people don't believe their money is used properly they can homeschool their kids.

And how do you know they are capable of providing their kids a proper education?

"Homeschooling over the internet? Like back in 2020 when the schooling over the internet caused mass learning impediments in children?

I’ll pass."

No, the parent teaches, they just use the internet resources to stay one step ahead of the student. I did this with my nephew. He jumped 2 grades each year because he had someone personally holding him accountable. We pulled him out of school because he was in the 5th grade and couldn't read at all. They were just passing him to the next grade every year.

Because homeschooling programs exist on the internet and they still have to pass standardized tests.

Competition drives the cost down.

Drives the cost down? Public school is basically free! And any fees can be covered by fee waivers and such.

If there’s a free option, and private schools still cost so much, it’s not an issue of competition.
