Aight, not an American here, and I'm not trying to argue for one party or the other, BUt
I feel like a great part of the reason you guys need guns for your safety is that people already have guns. your level of gun violence is unmatched among other 'fully developped' countries from what I know.
If ,*hypothetically somehow*, you could get rid of all non-police-or-military-owned guns and started selling them again but with restrictions on who gets a permit for it and such, you would get a lot less gun related crimes.
Now of course there would still be people who use knives, crowbars, etc. to hurt people, but (and sorry to use this example, but it's the easiest one) school shooters would be much easier to escape from if they had to chase down every single one of their victims to stab them.

The problem is of course that, understandably, no one wants to have more trouble buying a gun for their self-defense than the madman who bought one easily three month prior. So it's a long term solution

Gun CONTROL. Proper vetting, make sure that they are kept safely and be tracked for safety. Make sure that it isn’t given out willy-nilly. Not taking away all guns. Nobody is taking your guns

I feel like there are a couple major differences here though.
- A hammer's primary use is to be a tool to help build things, that is the assumed use of it. Whereas a gun's, whether used to attack a rando or in completely justifiable self-defense, is meant to shoot things or people and puch a hole through them. The intended use is simply not the same
- It would take either a lot of strength or a lot of hits to kill or even maim someone with a regular hammer, whereas a gun can do so with a single bullet (depending on what gun we're talking about)
- finally, just my personal opinion, but I think justifying completely unrestricted gun sell because anyone can buy a hammer is like arguing for grenade launchers to be sold in any armory because you can find a 9mm there.

More people are killed by hammers than guns every year.

They already have all that in place... what they need is better mental illness help for the loony lefties...
