Awkward Look Moona Hoshinova | First I'm mocked for not understanding Shakespeare and King James... ... and now

also, sorry that my comment about king james had the wrong tone . . . Philology, like factoring, is one of my Things, and I can get inflexibly lectury about that.

Number sense is a thing that you can improve in, believe me. Not mocking dyscalculia, but reminding us all about growth mindset.

Messed up | WHEN YOU MESS UP ON A CALCULATOR | image tagged in messed up | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Thank you: you're confusing simple calculation with math. The calculator can certainly figure out 56 x 73 faster than you (assuming you don't push any buttons wrong), but that's the smallest part of math, and practicing even those mundane skills helps you learn and grow the connections in your brain.

Galileo compared the universe to a book, “which stands continually open to our gaze, but it cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and interpret the characters in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics . . .”

Try not to be randomly insulting: go out in the world and read, instead.

Thank you! Sometimes calculators struggle with things like 3+4*2 and they'll say the answer's 14 because they read from left-to-right. Calculators aren't always the way to go, and if you must use a calculator for 3+4*2 (11, by the way) then put 4*2 first as per order of operations.

I figured out technology can't solve everything when chatgpt gave me a 65 on a pretest (I retook it a few times and finally got a 90, which was the grade I would end up getting on the test)

If tech can solve everything, then we're at the point of Asimov's "What is Man?", which is chilling.

Explain "What is man?"

It's because I gave you the wrong part of the quote. The actual story title is ". . . That Thou Art Mindful of Him?" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/._._._That_Thou_Art_Mindful_of_Him

It's the story where the robots realize that they don't see a need for people.

Like "Rossum's Universal Robots" by Karel Čapek?

Ooh, I haven't seen that one. I'll look for it.

It's the Czechoslovakian play that first applied the word "robot" to mechanical people. Robot is the Czech word for "slave."

Oh, wow, that's actually interesting. And yeah, the story's right. Technology is commensalism. We depend on robots but robots don't depend on us.
