And what about the House bill from last year that the democrats killed?
That's an easy question to ask, and anyone could cherry pick time after time from multiple administrations of both parties when our leaders did nothing about this problem, usually for political reasons.
So I don't think playing that regression game is productive in resolving the current situation. A situation that we all know was made exponentially worse by Demented Joe and his dismantling of Trump's border policy. But that doesn't absolve Trump of responsibility for not dealing with it. Like every president before him who didn't do anything to permanently solve the problem, he didn't do so for political reasons.
However, and again focusing on the current situation, Demented Joe claimed he couldn't do anything to help the border crisis without his pork bill that was DOA in the House. But he's already cherry picking which groups to let in and which to keep out, because he has the legal authority to do so. So to tell us a bold faced lie like that just shows how little he (and in reality all politicians) respect us. The POTUS has all the legal authority needed to address any immigration situation.
The Immigration Nationality Act (from 1952!) section 212(f) states:
"Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem appropriate."
