After the USSR dissolved, Ukraine possessed a sizable number of former USSR nuclear ICBMs.
For various reasons, Ukraine was persuaded to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and give up it’s nukes, which went to Russia. In return, the USA, UK and Russia agreed to respect Ukraine’s borders and sovereignty. The three countries also agreed to support Ukraine if it was ever invaded.

Putin is a hardliner former KGB Communist who resents that USSR dissolved. The areas of Georgia (formerly of USSR) which he “annexed” in 2014 and Crimea in Ukraine are areas of strategic defense for Russia. Because Western Europe has invaded Russia twice (Napoleon and Hitler) Russians are wary of NATO, especially as it has added members close to Russia.

I am by no means justifying Putin’s invasions of Georgia or Ukraine.
