As I understand it, Columbus' men forced natives to mine gold and punished those who refused. Other atrocities also. Columbus was detained briefly for these crimes. He was not a saint, but he did open up the new world. He was a great explorer and adventurer, but maybe not a great guy. You have to put it in the context of history. Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and English, all committed similar crimes in their efforts to "explore." Sorry, lots of history sucks like that. You can't just delete it all. It's who we are.

Binary thinking is useless. History is complicated. There are no good guys. I have always said this. You are the moralist. I think morality is useless. Take for example the current conflict in the Middle East. Who are the "good guys?" Israel, Hamas, and Iran have all committed atrocities. That is history. Everyone commits atrocities. Name one country that has not. You can't. But you also have to look at the progress countries have made. Columbus was a pioneer.
