He was never liked here when he was a Democrat - not that anyone knew or cared, it's just a political party here, no biggie. No one here gave a crap about this phony political divide - till 2017, anyways. And he was quite the liberal too, as you can see in his own words:

He was never taken seriously, basic town clown, cringey, a bit soft in the head. Look him up at Studio54 to see what we've been laughing at since the 1970s. It's not an accident that he never ran for office in NYC nor that he lost the vote here by an astounding 90%.
Mind you, in that interview he seems surprisingly cogent compared to now, although he was always seen as an attention seeking buffoon that kept popping up for some mystifying reason. Of course it turns out he bought his airtime and publicty.
Sometimes some folks aren't liked simply because they aren't liked. In this case, Trump changed parties yet again and stances in order to sell himself to a base that would buy his bs. He's a charlatan, and he told them what they wanted because they were buying and they fell for it.
