Some apparently are, or at least claim they are in a weird sort of pearl clutching moment (see link above). The internet gives every Tom, Dick, and Harry a platform and makes it easier to find like minded idiots who gather (virtually) and echo each others opinions. Those with fringe opinions also tend to scream the loudest, both literally and metaphorically. This can make it appear that the fringe opinions/reactions are mainstream.

You certainly have a vivid imagination of the national anthem and some athletes that protest injustices perpitrated by police. Nobody is afraid.
