Global warming vs. global cooling | image tagged in global warming vs global cooling | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Even when the "global cooling" hypothesis was at its maximum (because of a temporary flatlining in temperature rise), it was no more than 10% of scientific papers. It got a lot of media attention, because it cut against the mainstream opinion, but any evidence for global cooling hypothesis quickly dissipated with the renewed surge in warming in the '80s.

Global cooling would still be anthropogenic.

Except I don't recall hearing about it till the latter part of the 80s.

Warming as a theory may have been more common with the scientific literature, but the Next Ice Age Cometh seemed to have gotten attention simply because winters were more noticeably brutal then, and it offered a neat explanation plus media loves the more sensationalistic anyways.

Remember, this was at a time you had to go seek out the journals. If you weren't subscribing to them or hanging out in that section of the rack at the library, you weren't exposed to it. So the cover of Time Magazine was a far bigger attention getter with the public, on thus the notion more widely heard about and known.

global warming doesn't mean the world will get warmer, it is actually an inaccurate term, it's actually accelerated climate change due to us, or also known as the accelerated green house effect, that doesn't just mean it will get warmer, it actually means we'll get more extreme weather, and more frequently as well.
