Yep. When Rome converted to Christianity, Romans were still celebrating the year-end Saturnalia so the authorities turned into Christmas, and that's why there are Christmas trees. Many religious scholars agree that Jesus was actually born in mid-year.

I was wondering how many days of Advent would go by before this inevitable subject would make its annual return.

It's not like the Christians weren't Romans, Greeks, or from any number of regions in Africa or Asia Minor. The religion spread via conversion, mostly among soldiers and slaves/lower classes. Constantine legalized Christianity and integrated it into the Roman Empire as a way to cement his power base. So it wasn't nearly an imposition of values as it was a very natural enculturation of the Classical and Christian world.
