Last week I heard a Christian call in to a radio program and say that the only time when he would even possibly be okay with an abortion is if a woman's life is in danger. That means that there could potentially be times where a woman's life is in danger where he actually doesn't believe she should be allowed to have an abortion, which would essentially condemn her to death.

There are at least two kinds of right-wing nonsense related to medically necessary abortions:

1. Claiming abortion “is never necessary to save the woman’s life.” They are simply ignorant as to all the ways a pregnancy can go wrong in a life-threatening way. Shocking, but there’s no requirement that Righties pay a moment’s thought to medical expertise before passing laws that affect the practice of medicine. And SCOTUS, who knows better than your average state legislator in Idaho, is happy to go derelict in its duty and look the other way.

2. Slightly less unhinged, but equally dangerous, are those who play this semantic game where they re-define medically necessary abortions as something other than an abortion. So that they can maintain their “total opposition to abortion,” I guess. But if they don’t fix the laws to clearly allow doctors to do their jobs, it amounts to the same thing. An uncertain legal regime that will force doctors to stand by while a woman lays there dying.

Absolutely right, and I've seen conservatives do both of those.

One conservative I talked to pointed me to a Planned Parenthood link where even they say that terminating an ectopic pregnancy doesn't qualify as an abortion. I find that really strange, because the word abortion is defined as the termination of a pregnancy, which would presumably include terminating an ectopic pregnancy as well.

It's the same thing they do with evolution. They try to make up terms like microevolution and macroevolution, so they can accept some evolution while denying the rest of it
