We live in very interwoven large societies where people are dependent on each other without even knowing. Most of pre-Marshall Plan Europe was closer to Medieval than modern, as was the rest of the world, if not worse. Yes, many people care. There are lots of conservatives right now who don't want same-sex marriage or even same-sex sexual activity to be legal and would love to overturn both supreme court cases on those issues.

This is blatant misinformation. He wants to overturn the federal protection for those things, because the constitution does not guarantee any of those rights, and so legally they should be left up to the states to decide. Because that is what the constitution says to do.
