Weirdly, one of the most literacy challenged states is uber-liberal California. Go figure. I guess they need all that educational time to cover . . . trans, masturbation, rainbow flags, and etcetera. No time for TRADITIONAL reading or writing or arithmetic.

Actually, here in Taxifornia our education system has been fcuked up for a long, long time before those issues came to prominence. I agree though, that's probably not helping the situation any. I haven't dug into it recently, but studies from before these issues showed that Taxifornia had the highest ratio of staff to students of any state. When you're not concerned about classroom size and are more concerned about paying the assistant principal(s) and office staff, then students' education is bound to suffer.

Interestingly those states are the biggest hubs of immigration. NJ ranks up there also. Of course there's multiple reasons, but that would seem to be a factor in terms of lag, focusing on ineffectual bilingual, as well as spending - as wealth disparity in those states is more glaring, and poorer immigrants tend not to rank too high on the budget allotment list,,,
