In Denver they run on taxpayer subsidies, meaning that the fares that riders pay would actually cost 2 to 3 times what is now being charged if the taxpayers weren't being squeezed.

In other words, those that DON'T ride the trains are paying for the ones that do.

the best thing to do, in which case, is to not drive since driving is already being disincentivized

gas prices are also subsidized by the government, meaning those that don't drive are paying for the people who do. that's without mentioning the costs freeways/turnpikes have, which are also taxpayer-subsidized.
