There is a black historian who lamented that MLK has been depicted as a kind of messianic figure in imagery because it makes it more difficult to talk about his socialist message. In other words, people typically stick to the generic MLK reputation (non-violent protest, standing up to oppression, etc.). I suppose it's interesting that despite MLK's socialism, the left of today can't take advantage of that and use it for its own advantage.
