Vigilante - a member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate.
I guess you could call them vigilantes, but I would argue they weren't a self appointed group. Unlike Kyle and company who came for the purpose, they were reacting in the moment.
The cops ignored him - He killed someone and then ran away - I don't know that he knew where cops were to run towards. Maybe yes, maybe no. The initial fleeing was likely justified. I won't second guess his decision to remove himself in the moment.
But he called his friend, not 911
He didn't turn himself into police when he had the opportunity. Maybe he tried to and the cops weren't listening. But it didn't look like an earnest attempt in the video. I bet they will call the cop he waved down the street during the trial. I wonder what Kyle said to him. Did he say someone is hurt, someone is chasing me, I just shot someone...I wonder if we'll find out.
He didn't drive to the nearest police station.
He only turned himself in after it was all over social media. Maybe he would have turned himself in anyway, but I don't think that looks good for him.
I've never shot anyone, so I don't know what was in his head. And I will admit he has points in his favor. One of the guys he aimed at sopped advancing and backed away and he didn't fire.
I really do think he didn't intend any harm, but he also came armed to do a job he wasn't trained or mature enough for. Someone practicing medicine without a medical license is responsible for the harm they cause (example). I don't think he deserves life in jail, but he doesn't deserve no charges either. I really don't know which way this is going to go...I suspect he'll get off, or just get the endangering someone else charge.
