The Confederate flag did cross the Potomac, numerous times. The Confederate army fough a few battles north of the Potomac. The Battle for Sharpsburg( aka Battle of Antietam) for one. Gettysburg, also north of the Potomac, was another.

The confederate flag never crossed the Potomac to be publicly displayed in Washington D.C.

On January 6th, the confederate flag was strutted in the Capitol building.

Also, it appears as if the FBI was directly involved in the vandalism and violence perpetrated that day.
The videos released last week show the people with that flag and Trump flags and t shirts were just milling around and and taking selfies while the same release of video show a group of people, all dressed in black from head to toe, breaking windows to gain entry in another part of the building. The only people in that video is them, no other people wearing Trump shirts or waving flags. Those, most assuredly, were US Government stooges.

When the best you can do is open with "It appears as if," you're not skating on thin ice, you're trying to walk on water.

For many of the people there, yes, it was basically just a tour. The police let them in, and they never hurt anyone. Some people committed assaults or vandalism. I guess you could call it a riot. It was not, it never was, and never will have been, an insurrection.
