Essentially, the effectiveness of a surgical mask depends on two major factors: the location of the sick individual and the method in which germs are transmitted. Of course, in close quarters, a surgical mask may be particularly effective in preventing germs from being transmitted to uninfected individuals.
Ergo, when surgeons are in close quarters with open bodies it helps prevent GERMS not viruses to contaminate the body or sterile equipment.
Most people do not wear them correctly to prevent even germs. And they are absolutely non effective on a virus that small. Even n95 masks which would need to be fitted on an individual for proper sizing (not to mention they have to be clean shaven) don't protect against spreading or contacting covid.

Respiratory infections, both bacterial and viral, are spread by the exhalation of individual microbes, they're spread by respiratory droplets that act as transmission vectors and masks help block them. And, poor compliance is no excuse to refrain from using them. Maybe, if people like you weren't spreading misinformation about their effectiveness, more people might make an effort to wear them properly.

Masks don't prevent the spread of covid. They also lower o2 sats and compromise your natural immunity due to basically having a petri dish on your face. N95 masks can be highly effective, though not foolproof, and do REQUIRE PROPER FIT TO BE EFFECTIVE. Surgical masks provide 45-55% filtration of aerosol particles, cloth masks around 25-38% filtration depending on the number of layers and material type, and single layer bandanas and handkerchiefs around 3% filtration.

If you think a mask will help you from contracting covid, wear one. DONT JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE FOR NOT WEARING IT.

Here are two particle size standards (from the actual lab that I actually work in). Same concentration by weight. Which one is clear and which one isn't? I'll give you a minute.

Respiratory aerosols are in the 5 to 10 micron range. You tend to not see them because the minimum size that is visible to the naked eye is about 50 microns. Vape and cigarette smoke particles are at least an order of magnitude smaller than that. You can see smoke because there's so many more particles present. They're actually in a size range that is smaller than the wavelength of red light, which is why cigarette and vape fumes look bluish in bright light: the longer red wavelengths tend not to be reflected. Try again.

If you wear glasses with a mask on, they tend to fog up. Why? Air goes around them. That's why you can actually breathe while wearing them. It's a physical barrier to the drops of spit and snot that come out of your face, not the fumes from an e-cig. Particle size matters, Puddin' Pop.

That's a very rare disease. How many people have high blood pressure or heart disease, two conditions that can make covid more fatal? How many people have newborns with virtually no immune systems?

Question A is not compromised immune systems. Question B is irrelevant as covid poses virtually no threat to children.

But the question was the masks. I said surgeons wear them because they work with profoundly immunocompromised (i.e. cut entirely open) patients. Risk factors for if you happen to get it are not the same thing.
