Well, there is that little difference that we have been funding and training these guys for 20 years.

Billions of dollars in aid to Diem began in 1955. So what was different?

Yes ok a handful of "advisors" were sent in the 50s but the bulk began in the 60s with roughly ten years of fighting. I am pretty sure we have spent (much) more on this war. Sure you can point out similarities but for the most part, we have been in control for a majority of the time in Afghanistan. Would you say we had the same level of control in Vietnam?

During my time in Afghanistan, US/NATO forces were "in control" of only our own bases, and (for no more than a few hours at a time) small areas that we raided. Frankly, to suggest we had overall control in either country is ridiculous.
Anyone could point out minor differences between the two wars. But I'm sure that a hundred years from now, both misadventures will be seen as almost identical.

Go ahead and define "in control" however best supports your argument. You are comparing Afghanistan to Vietnam and I don't think this is an example of a minor difference. I also don't think it will take a hundred years, I think we can see now, both are extremely costly and will not achieve the desired results. My point is Afghanistan did not have the same level of fighting, we spent more money and had more time to train/support a friendlier group of people.

Yes, you're exactly right.

In Vietnam, the French were there from December 19, 1946 – August 1, 1954. Then we were there until 1975 (21 years).

Learn some math and history.

Actually, I need to change my original estimate of 21 years.

We were in Vietnam from November 1, 1955 – April 30, 1975, so ONLY 19 years and 6 months, not like the 20 years that we were in Afghanistan. No, nothing like that at all.

Maybe try digging into your own history lesson and see how many “advisers” we had in the 50s as opposed to the 60s and 70s. See if the compares to what we had in Afghanistan. Also let me know if the costs are the same for both. I am told I am ridiculous to think Afghanistan was ever under any form of control. Ok so if everyone here wants to claim the costs were the same, the number years is the same, and we still don’t have control, then please enlighten me as to what must we do? Another 20 years?

"enlighten me as to what must we do? " GTFO, but do it right, burn everything to the ground as we leave and not care one whit who or what takes over. Honestly, after Obama got Bin Laden we should have shut the op down.

OK, in Nam we were there ~20 years plus the Frogs were there 8, what's so hard to understand?

Since you're grasping at straws trying to think about this (your logic is bouncing around like a superball, hard to follow), here's three more similarities for you:

1. Both Vietnam and Afghanistan have a culture that measures time in millennia, not two or four year election cycles like we do. They can wait us out quite easily no matter how long we spend there.

2. We were trying to win the hearts and minds with flowery concepts like freedom and democracy when all the populace cared about was where their next bowl of rice or goat milk was coming from. They didn't give a damn what kind of system they lived under.

3. We were trying to fight guerilla forces that could easily blend into said civilian population. We were trying to use a force designed to meet and beat the Soviets in Europe against a force that didn't even wear uniforms.

I am sorry that this is hard for you to follow but no my logic is not bouncing around. Since you appear to be too lazy to do a quick search of costs and troop levels, here it is. Vietnam is said to have cost $1 trillion in current dollars, Afghanistan $2 trillion. We had a few hundred "advisors" in the 50s and then in the 60s it built up in the thousands. It was until 64-65 and the Gulf of Tonkin that we sent hundreds of thousands. After the Tet Offensive in 68 we started reducing troops. In Afghanistan at the height it was 100k. Now if you want to think that those numbers don't matter and 20 years is 20 years, then good for you. The meme is suggesting the exit of Vietnam is the same as Afghanistan, which I agree with to an extent. I only point out the time and conditions for training the group of people we prefer, was longer and more favorable. I too think we should have begun this process a long time ago, but salt the earth as we go? That is one of the stupidest things I have read here.

"salt the earth as we go" - not my words at all - I said "burn everything to the ground" which is tongue in cheek since there's nothing to burn except mud huts and who gives a shit about them anyhow?

Wow totally took you out of context! I wonder how everyone left will view us? Or the rest of the world. Again stupidest thing ever here.

True. Sadly, it means that the 82d will be heading back. Horray?
