The problem with using gun control every time that someone "shoots up a store" is that politicians are trying to control objects, not the people that are doing the criminal actions.
They don't really know how firearms work, so they criminalize the objects, like bump stocks, magazines that hold more than X rounds, what they look like, etc.
The laws that they pass are little more than political theater, feel good nonsense. Criminals find ways around them and start using other means such as running cars through crowds of people or wading in with a machete, either one doing as much damage as gunmen can.
