In looking at a few other sources, it looks like requiring a letter of referral from a qualified mental health professional is also the standard before starting any treatments.

If you want to take all such decisions out of the hands of parents, I would also expect that circumcisions are also something you want to do away with, also children being allowed to marry with parental consent prior to being legal adults? I don't know where you get that I want to eliminate parental control as that is far from the truth. When liberal parents raise their children to "choose" their eventual sex, I draw the line. I believe that liberalism has created some real parental monsters and that the Democrat Party has greatly contributed to driving people to the edge of insanity and beyond. People who don't agree with you must be mentally ill. I can understand the temptation to believe that (so so much), but its a mistake. It arises from the frequent use of straw man arguments. Too many don't look at the real reasons the people who disagree with them want the things they want. When you hear the 'crazy reasons' people want something - go hear the argument from their own lips, because you are being lied to. People are generally not convinced by crazy arguments.

The idea that so many of your fellow Americans are crazy should be the first indicator that someone is manipulating you.

I'm not saying this because I think it will change your mind - but if you don't know where the other side is actually coming from, you are never going to find middle ground.
