The nearest galaxy is 25,000 light-years away, so it won't get colonized in any of our lifetimes.

Im talking about the big picture, like if humanity survives millions of years

If humanity never ends, then of course. It's essentially impossible for that no to happen.
1 up, 3y
Life always finds a way. The way I see it, humanity will die out with the universe.

*not
3 ups, 3y
No, not really. We're already screwing up one planet, imagine what we could do to the entire galaxy!

heck, humanity can't even be a fully functional society on earth let alone on some other planet
1 up, 3y,

We have a well functioning society, we just need to unite under one cause.

"we have a well functioning society"

then what about all of the wars, racial injustice, sexism, homophobia, poverty, starvation, and hostile political climates going on?
0 ups, 3y
There will always be that, but a well functioning society is not defined by their worst features, but their best.

Maybe.

If we discover something that’s like hyperspace (Star Wars) or warp drives (Star Trek and Warhammer 40,000). Then maybe we’ll have a successful intergalactic civilization. If the government doesn’t screw up all of humanity.
1 up, 3y
That last one's a big if

Or cryo pods
0 ups, 3y,
1 reply
Yes but, who will maintain the pods if there’s something wrong with the ship?
0 ups, 3y
Thats just the thing. It doesn’t necessarily have to be pods. You know that chip Elon Musk made to control Monke? What if we could store our conscious into that chip and put it into a computer?

Hmm... I see this going two ways: 1) We just bring all of Earth's problems and try and dump them onto other planets which does nothing but make things worse. And 2) We eventually get so hung up and "so close" to Intergalactic or even Interplanetary colonization that life here on Earth begins to wither away and kill itself thinking, "Oh, we'll soon have another planet! What's the need for this one?" I'm no political genius if I'm politically knowledgeable at all and I'm really just going off what my imagination is thinking up lmao

Earth will wither away regardless if we pollute it or not. The sun will consume Earth in four billion years, destroying ever trace that ever was on earth of human life. It’s expand or die.

Intergalactic is way too big

I could possibly see there maybe being a Mars colony given that Elon Musk exists

Hey captain scar, this is off topic, but I saw that there was a mod spot open in Middle school. I was just wondering if you could tell me how to apply

Shoot for the moon, and if you miss, you can suffocate in space I spose

I'm going to buck the trend and say not likely.

1) The amount of space between stars already seems insurmountable. The amount of space between galaxies, however, is several orders of magnitude larger. And there is ***NOTHING*** in between them, as far as we can tell.
2) The space between galaxies may be completely unlike the space between stars and present new dangers/obstacles that we can't even imagine right now.
3) By the time the technology has been established, humanity may have already evolved into a new species (or multiple species)... that is, if we don't kill ourselves off before then.

N O humans would probably kill them self’s by accident soon

I doubt it

have you been on Twitter/TikTok/CNN/FoxNews/ Anywhere on the whole of the planet - basically n-0
[deleted]

Well, we already have the technology required to colonize Mars, so if we use a warp drive (which might actually be possible), we could colonize other galaxies
0 ups, 3y
Nope. Until people stop worshiping rulers we won’t become intergalactic.

Yes, we currently have the technology and budget to build a moon base right now. This moon base could serve as a hub for reaching other planets, due to lower gravity and an extra push from its orbit. From there, we could go on to colonise many other planets in the solar system. It is possible to build things like ion drives that use little propellant, and thrust builds up over time, and physics tells us that it is possible to build warp drives, allowing us to travel faster than light. We do not have the technology to colonise other galaxies, or other stars, but we have potential, and in the next 1000 years, we could have control over the solar system, maybe with a Dyson sphere/swarm, and missions to other stars and maybe even galaxies, but for this to happen, we would have to set aside political conflicts that will not matter, and start thinking not years or decades, but in millennia. It is possible, but a lot would need to be done for it to be feasible.

We have everything except the political power to do it:

Yes. We are too concerned with political conflicts that will not matter in the long term
0 ups, 3y
That is why we have helicopters on Mars yet have Texas be seriously harmed by a cold winter. Scientists who care about people and the future manage the former. Politicians who care about themselves and the present manage the latter.

Not with the technology we have as of today. But maybe we’ll find something to help us accomplish that in the future. I don’t think so though (I feel like people 300 years from now are going to see this and laugh but aNyWaYs) I wish they’d just fix the traffic in Austin before trying to build a civilization in outer space haha
