I think you're pretty much spot on. And this is coming from a 'ToseRumper'

I also believe there are a lot of people who fall in the middle, but are not strictly aligned with all, or even the majority of moderate positions that either party claims to hold.

I can only use myself as an example. While I'm more in line with what the republicans claim to be their fiscal policies, I'm also more in line with dems and what they claim are their social policies. The key thing is, I don't think it's the govt's job to legislate morals, and definitely not the taxpayers' job to pay for the costs associated with that type of legislation.
