Here's the trick:
Building more affordable housing reduces the value of existing property. If house values drop considerably then the economy ultimately crashes, so they've never built enough housing in the past and never will in the future.

Taking the government OUT of land, property, building regs etc is the only plausible way to increase affordable housing.

The price will go down when regulations are removed.

the price will also go down when there are loads of empty houses after the boomer generation starts dying out.

Houses are an investment, not a place to live. Their value must be protected. (Note: sarcasm)

Ask the people currently relying on the government to do stuff just how competent the government is. What we "deserve" is irrelevant if the government can not manage it.
