The scary part was that people don't realize Orwell was not writing fiction!

Orwell's 1984 was published in 1948/49. It was a direct reflection on the "failure" of communism/socialism. The book was written AFTER 1917 Russia and 1933 Germany.

After 1984 was written, we have the 1978 Iran cultural revolution AND the 1966 Mao's Communist revolution, of both reflected everything in 1984.

So Orwell was not "making a prediction," but detailing the systematic pattern of hostile communist/socialist takeover.

You are correct about this. 1984 was Orwell's response to what he was seeing in collectivist authoritarian countries. It was more of a warning than a prediction. Nut prediction works better for the meme lol.

It used to be that Orwell's 1984 could be found in any high school library. 1984 and Solzhenitsyn's non-fiction trilogy The Gulag Archipelago should be required reading for every student. It is no hyperbole to say reading both would save lives.

We used to teach kids the lessons of Orwell so they wouldn't become collectivist tyrants. Now we teach them to become collectivist tyrants so they won't learn the lessons Orwell....
