The wall wasn't built over crossing points, roads, and application centers...It was an easy way to rally Americans around half of the solution, which is to stop illegal immigration. The problem is both sides of the issue have become so focused on illegal immigration that legal immigrants, such as two of my aunts from the Philippines, have to wait through massive amounts of time and spend thousands and thousands of dollars in order to become citizens...most people who come here illegally do so because they can't afford the monetary and time costs of legally crossing. If we fix the legal system, we solve the crisis. Then we can work to seal the border against drug runners and human traffickers who will make up the overwhelming majority of the remaining illegal crossers.
I feel like it's a fair and bipartisan approach. We will have large numbers of proud, legal American citizens who don't have to worry about being deported and can pay taxes for the benefits offered by the most powerful economy on the planet. Does this seem wrong? I'm open to suggestions for improving my theory.
