Something interesting that many people don't know is that Halloween is not some old, pagan holiday. Catholic Church invented the whole thing to try to convert pagans to Christianity. There were many idol-worshipping holidays that they (I think it was the celts, but I'm not positive if that is right. Might have been germanic people) had long ago, and the church wanted to end that. So, they made a holiday, named "all saints day" or "all hallows day" to praise the catholic saints instead of pagan gods. However, the best way to get people to celebrate a holiday back then was to make it more fun and drunk than the others. Because of this, they established the day before as "All Hallows Eve," when dead spirits would be allowed to roam free and, yes, everyone would get super drunk. It over time became more associated with evil spirits before the holy and all that, and the name was shortened to Halloween.
