Ok so half of Congress goes to jail in, what, February? They each get their day in court, and don’t step down until there’s a guilty verdict. Their states start the process of setting up emergency elections but can’t actually hold them until the seat is vacated. Once the guilty verdicts come in (assuming they do, and again, not one will), the states move as fast as they decide to move (because states get to decide this for themselves), and we get a full Congress again. This happens in the following February at the earliest.
By this time Congress has been unable to pass appropriations or a continuing resolution, meaning the executive branch has no money for the entirety of the next fiscal year. Not for Secret Service protection for the President. Not for ICE. Not for Defense. Not for the entire Intelligence Community. Not for Transportation.
And if there are no guilty verdicts (and there won’t be any), then everyone comes back in September at the earliest and makes sure the President gets absolutely nothing he wants ever again. He is effectively a lame duck for four years. Unless, of course, they decide to impeach and remove him, which they would succeed in doing in record time.
The President will never, ever decide to do this to himself, if for no other reason than it would be completely ineffective and do nothing but harm to the American people.
