The Most Interesting Man In The World Meme | I DON'T ALWAYS HAVE MIXED FEELINGS BUT WHEN I DO, THEY'RE ABOUT BOYCOTTS. | image tagged in memes, the most interesting man in the world | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
It's hard to be consistent. For example, I don't like Google's or Bill Gates' politics, but I'm not going to do without, respectively, my Android phone or Windows computer.

Sometimes boycotts can hurt people who had nothing to do with the grievance. For example, there are a lot of independently owned Goodyear tire & service dealers. A boycott, if made to stick, is going to hurt them more than Goodyear corporate. Their profits are in mechanical services; tires actually have a lower profit margin.

Other times, boycotts produce the exact opposite of what their proponents were trying to accomplish. Goya Foods experienced an increase in sales thanks to a BUYcott. Chick-Fil-A restaurants have lines winding clear around the building.

If you ARE going to boycott someone, it's not enough to simply stop buying their products or services, if you ever bought them in the first place. You have to let them KNOW you are, and WHY.

Mixed feelings. They're not always the most effective, but it's also an ethical thing to me. I don't want my money going to something I don't support.

Boycotts can only be effective if they are not clouded by political and economical interests for the one who does want to punish, and quite often this is the case. A boycott that appears to have been effective was the South-Africa boycott which came as a protest against the apartheid regime. Only a few companies (most notably Shell) still did business with South-Africa in the time.

Other boycotts can indeed be lesser effective. There has been some will to boycott Russia for many reasons, and now aside from the question if Russia should be punished or not, as that is a discussion not relevant for this particular question, there are obstacles in the boycott itself. Russia is one of the biggest gas producers of Europe. Some countries are completely dependent on Russia for their energy as a result. A boycott will therefore only backfire on them. One of the reasons behind sustainable energy is also to be less dependent on other countries... It's more than just climate change.

Now, Trump tries to boycott Iran, but he knows his boycott won't work as Europe wants to keep the nuclear deal up, so what did he do... Ban all European countries to do business with the U.S. if they are in any kind of way related to Iran. This is by the way a violation of international treaties regarding trade in general, not to mention that Trump does this way dictate the law to countries who are not part of the U.S. This means that he may be able to get away with this on the short term, but on the long term this won't sustain, regardless if Biden wins the elections or not and goes a different way on this particular matter or not. Also Iran is used to be under pressure from the entire world and has a few powerful allies. Boycotts can only be effective if the whole world is in agreement, like in the apartheid case, but as soon as interests of other powerful players, like in the cases of Russia and Iran, things will turn out differently.

When it comes to boycotts against companies, then basically the same applies. I will not do business myself anymore with some companies who swindled me. But I do know that other people will still go there. So that company won't care. When the group gets larger, then they can have a problem.

Boycotts require unification from the boycotting parties to have any effect. Also some parties can really get in trouble due to a boycott, others may not. Every case is different. Sometimes a boycott fail and make the boycotted party only more fanatic...

Yeah I think boycotts are stupid. Like for example, boycotting Israel. You wont. be able to get alot of technology or medicine, or anything important all because ur petty. Thats my view. a

They can be both effective and ineffective because the other side will buy more of their products

That's true, look at Goya XD

When a consumer buys from a company, they financially support it in return for satisfactory products or services. If the company doesn't provide a good enough experience to the consumer (no refunds, too expensive, flimsy material, poor sanitation, rude staff, denial of service to a particular group, etc.), the consumer will find a more reliable company to buy from. If a company loses enough of its market, it can no longer support itself. Boycotts are the most effective way of forcing a company to change its practices to better fit their customers.

Works enough to keep some brands off my shelfs, it’s the perfect excuse to not watch stupid ass marvel movies and alike. De niro to zero,

Boycotts can be effective if enough people catch on.
I think most people will just spend their money as they see fit,
and if they are influenced by the political or social stance of
the owners of a business then so be it.
I don't exactly agree with public figures calling for boycotts of a
business. It's too much like cancel culture and I'm against getting
people fired or deleted for having an opinion, even if it's unpopular.

They may work for a while, but most people will eventually get over whatever the issue is and go back to buying the product they want to buy because they like it. Look at Gillette and Nike, they were boycotted like crazy but I don't see them going anywhere soon. I try to be serious about something if I actually intend to boycott it. For instance, I don't buy Gillette stuff anymore and I don't shop at Target. They will do just fine without my money. Nike, while I don't appreciate their going all political, I do own several Nike branded items and I'll continue to wear them because I already paid for them, but I generally don't buy their stuff anymore. My company offers uniform shirts at half price that are Nike branded though and I will buy those because I need uniform clothes, so it's all subjective.
