That's true. Nancy Green was born into slavery. She was hired in 1890 by the R.T. Davis Milling Company in St. Joseph, Missouri, to represent "Aunt Jemima." Green was one of the organizers of the Olivet Baptist Church. Her career allowed Green the financial freedom to become an activist and engage in antipoverty programs. She was one of the first African-American missionary workers. She used her stature as a spokesperson to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for individuals in Chicago. In 2020 she got canceled by political correctness.

The character was cancelled, not Nancy Green.

Yes. Nancy Green was well paid to portray that character.

She did a lot of great things with her money.

It's totally okay to admire her and her work AND still condemn the racist stereotype she was well payed to portray.

You can do that.

You can say, "Nancy was pretty cool. And that character is racist. We know better than that now. Let's change it."

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm only familiar with the picture of Aunt Jemima on packaging. I've never heard that being good at making pancakes is a black stereotype, much less a negative one. How was the character portrayed that made/makes it a racist character?

Sure. I can understand the confusion.

Aunt Jemima comes from the The Minstrel Show era- specifically, when white men would put on blackface to mock African Americans for white crowds. This wasn't a performance showcasing the nuance of African American life. It was straight up making fun of them.

There's even a song from that era called Old Aunt Jemima.

The logo face you see on packages today is highly sanitized. But the history is still there. It's still a problem. It comes from a deeply racist time and a deeply racist place. You can't graphic design your way out of that.

She needs to be retired.

And good for Nancy Green for making all that money. I'm glad she was able to profit from it.
