Human beings are social creatures, and we cannot function without cooperation. We have built a modern society that is unparalleled in human history, but I fear we are in danger of losing it.
We have also built atomic weapons capable of incinerating the earth in an instant, after all. The Cold War is over, but many more such “cold conflicts“ on a smaller scale (like India/Pakistan, Iran/Israel) exist. One moment of distrust or miscalculation could prove fatal.
There are several stories of nuclear apocalypse almost occurring during the Cold War, and not just during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Wise people in mid-level military positions exercised their better judgment and refused to hit the button.
We owe everything to them.
It takes just a moment to destroy what may take years, decades, or centuries to build.
Therefore peace keeping, and when wars begin, peace-making are crucial abilities. For all wars however they started can, have, and eventually must, come to an end.
Peace is the natural state of human existence, but unnatural forces still disrupt it, requiring our continual attention.
We play out these same dramas on a small-scale in our daily lives, making our own choices in our dealings with others that either make the world a better place, or don’t.
Take a deep breath and choose peace.
