He didn't assert anything - he simply answered a clearly loaded question. How are you deducing that's it's a swing and a miss?

Politically, it's a swing and a miss. China had nothing to do with the question stated. He was clearly emotional when reacting to it and just drew from an assortment of practiced responses. Unfortunately, they had nothing to do with the question.

She asked:

"You've said many times that the US is doing far better than any country when it comes to testing. Why does that matter? Why is this a global competition to you if every day Americans are still losing their lives and we're still seeing more cases every day?"

A politician worth his salt could've simply answered...

"Well, they're losing their lives everywhere in the world but this is not a competition. These are people. This is about finding out as much as we can, helping as many as we can, and making sure we stay ahead of the virus whenever we can."

It's was that simple. A swing and a miss.

One more thing. Most Americans blame China for what the news is touting as our extremely high death rate. So based on that, it was a political win for Trump to place the blame where most Americans see it belonging.

That China had nothing to do with the question asked is nothing but an empty claim that does not stand to rational or historical scrutiny. China has been responsible for most of the viruses the USA has faced.

The topic of the question was the virus. The virus originated in China. Both China and WHO hid and mischaracterized the the virus and putt forth the false impression that human to human transmission wasn't possible. This was clearly not the case - and as a result - China and WHO were responsible for a global pandemic.

The reporter's question was loaded with a false assumptions. For Trump to have answered that question would be akin to answering the question " When did you stop beating your wife? " To answer the question in any way would be to concede to it's false assumptions - making the answer of the question appear guilty no matter how he answered it.

Trump rightly ignored the question and asked her a question to place the blame where the blame rightly lay - with China. And naturally, being the left wing journalist that she is, she turned into a opportunity to imply Trump was being racist. The race card is the most typical of "progressive" debate tactics when they're either losing a debate or their tactics backfire. Which hers did.

It was simply a loaded question which Trump quickly recognized and rightly responded by answering it with a question of his own .

If Trump spent all his time answering the questions of left wing reporters in the manner in which you have suggested - The entire press conference would be spent with him spending all his time unpacking loaded question, which most of the questions are.

Again, it was a loaded question and honestly a softball. All he had to do was deny it was a competition and move on. But it had been almost an hour and that is pretty lengthy as far as press conferences go so, it's okay that he couldn't handle it. After all, he wasn't elected for being a good politician but rather a good businessman. A pity he wasn't that either.

He could have answered it in the way in which you're suggesting, but that would have been a poor move and use of his time. Him placing the blame on China was good from from a political standpoint and a logical one. If he dealt with all reporters in the way in which you're suggesting - All of the time in his press briefings would be answering questions by unpacking the loaded assumptions in them with absolutely fruitless results in providing the American people with actual information. This is precisely what press conferences at the White House are supposed to be about, information, but since the press wants to make it all about them, he often has a hard time accomplishing this, because of having to play games with the press like this woman.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I may have answered it the way you suggest as well, but I think he wasn't thinking of it in those terms of righting the wrongs of the woman's false assumptions.

Except they baited him and he fell right for it. So, the liberals will naturally eat it up.

Fell for what? He ignored the racebaiter and walked away after an hour when he had enough.

Again, I agree that it did not end abruptly. How can something end "suddenly" if it's been an hour? The word the press continue to use is "abruptly" yet this is not true. It certainly ended rudely, or after he failed to answer a question or two. But not "abruptly."

No, he did not ignore her. If he had, he would've ended the conference before answering the initial question or continued to answer the question to re-frame it as I have previously suggested.

Yes, he ignored the follow-up question but the damage had already been done when he mentioned China to an Asian-American reporter. There is nothing wrong with that, of course.
But when China had nothing to do with the question of why "he" thinks it's important to be "competitive" in keeping Americans "tested" or "alive"... again it seems easy to me.

Unframe the competition angle and say his priority is to get America through this. And it looked like he was going to do that but he couldn't.

In the end, he was simply too tired.

He is a 73 yo.

I was wondering if the reporter asked him that in order to throw China in his face, with their bs numbers, if Trump said he was winning the 'competition'.

I did only see the last 15 minutes so I don't know how obnoxious the reporters were previously.

Like I said before, when these disrespectful, viral clip seeking babies act up, Trump should treat them like the children they are. A tough question doesn't have to be disrespectful. The press hated Dubya but they managed with him.

I haven't found the full one-hour either but supposedly it was incredibly intense.

What’s the point of a mask if you are going to take it off to yell at somebody?

I think when she started to imply that he was being racist, she wanted him to see that she was Asian, but that's just speculation on my part.
3 ups, 5y
It was her 'unmasking' Trump's vile hatred against Asians. Symbolic and all for the viral clip.

I mean it’s not difficult to tell she is Asian with the mask on. But still what’s the point of the mask?

I agree, you can tell she's Asian, but I think she wanted to allow for a full view of her face, as well as allowing for her voice to carry more to make her point. I think the point of the mask is the point of most "progressives" wearing them, To virtue signal. I'm sure you're probably aware of all these idiots on facebook with their profile pictures being pictures of them with masks on. This is "progressive" virtue signalling at it's finest.
