You think maybe the lack of a shutdown could have been a reason for the high death toll?

0.6% that's a high flu season now a days.

If my math is correct I think you mean 0.06%?
...or to be more precise 0.0651685393%.

...which is extremely high for a general population death rate nowadays. (Roughly 3x as high as the highest flu season going back at least a decade.)

I'm talking about the areas that have widespread testing, not those areas that have almost no testing. The numbers you are looking at are averaged between the two.
They report that around 0.1% of people die from the flu each year (now this number may be off, but that's what they are all saying).
We know the death rate in areas that are widely tested is 0.1% and that includes all of the over reporting of deaths. Look at any area that has high testing rates yourself the numbers are super low. We know that 90% of the deaths are in the elderly who have lived longer than the average life span. We also know that any deaths that are not in the elderly are from people with preexisting deadly conditions.

The numbers I was looking at, and which MiniApplels was looking at, and which I think I incorrectly assumed you were looking at, were the numbers in the OP meme here about the 1957 Asian flu. 116,000 dead would have been ~0.065% of the entire US population in 1957.(178,000,000)....

But it looks like you're actually talking about the mortality rate of those infected with Coronavirus compared to the normal flu. So ok....

The majority of those killed by coronavirus are elderly people and/or people with pre-existing conditions. The majority of those killed by the normal flu are also the elderly and/or people with pre-existing conditions.

The death rate of those infected by Coronavirus may or may not also be exactly the same as the normal flu's death rate.

But one thing that is not the same is the contagiousness of them.. Coronavirus is roughly twice as contagious as the flu. It is for this reason that it will kill (and has already killed) far more people than the normal flu. So far it has killed roughly twice as many people as your average flu season over the past decade...and that is in context of the shutdown. Who knows how many more would have died had we done nothing.

Can you cite a source that actually says its killed twice as many people as the normal flu, accounting for the fact that nearly all deaths are counted as covid-19 deaths in the US?

You're claiming "nearly all deaths in the US are counted as covid-19 deaths" and you want ME to cite a source..? Lol

The average number of people who die in the US per day is ~7,500..... So even if by "nearly all" you meant "half", that would mean they are counting roughly 110,000 covid deaths every month. I'm pretty sure that literally nobody is claiming that. And actually based on what I've read, I think it could be argued that they are counting Covid-19 deaths more accurately than they "count" normal flu deaths.. (apparently the CDC flu death counts are at least partially based on estimates and algorithms.. not by actually counting people who died while infected).

But ya my sources are the CDC, Johns Hopkins, worldometers.info, health.com, my phone's calculator, etc..

CDC only provides estimates for the flu... even their past numbers are estimates.

Bro you don't need to grasp at straws.... just admit that covid-19 is worse than the flu.

Nope. I think the high death toll is caused by the same padding of numbers you get anytime there is a monetary reward for doing same, combined with the span of unknown, asymtomatic folk who got Covid and didn't notice. Those folk are numbered between 36% to 86% of people who get Covid-19, depending upon the source. Testing in LA showed 55% more cases of Covid antibodies than originally projected. The numbers are already shifting as testing becomes more prevalent.
