When a stream owner is no longer active their streams remain ownerless and sometimes with no moderator. Some people submit memes to which never get approved because the owner is absent and did not add any moderators. I feel that we need some default for these streams. Other times there are other moderators, but who have limited authority as they are not the owner. And you must be the owner of a stream in order to do things like set a streams approval for auto, or approval only, limits on submissions etc...

Perhaps when a stream is created there should be a requirement to appoint at least two moderators. And if a stream owner is gone for a certain length of time ownership can be handed off to one of the moderators. If the owner ever returns they could have the chance to reclaim their stream. I dunno. SOMETHING should be in place in this regard. I am sure whoever came up with this idea of allowing all these streams to exist never thought this would be an issue. After all, we can't always think of everything. But we need some way for left behind streams to be managed.

Also, what about streams where the content therein is actually against site rules? You know nudity, p-o-r-n and what not. Should there be a way to report a stream for inappropriate content? Mind you, there are users on here who are of elementary school age. Though it is said one must be of the age of 13 to use the site, you have plenty of users 10 years old, maybe younger. Not sure how to handle that. This is definitely not a place for kids that young. I can't be the only one thinking this.

I had a thought about the dead streams. Place a time limit on new posts. If there aren't any new posts in two months, send an alert to the stream owner. Give them a week to respond and if no response, remove the stream from the list. If no response in a month, delete the stream.

And I do not want a second moderator for my stream. It's a private stream (you are welcome to come by and use it) and I want to keep it that way.

You can't stop children from using this site as there isn't any verification needed to prove age. The rules state what is allowed and if underage users are here, that is more an issue for their parents than the site. Now if they wanted to verify ages and make this an adult only site, that would be different.

Sorry, but you misunderstand. I am not referring to streams that no one is posting in, I am referring to streams that have plenty of active followers. Someone should be keeping an eye on said streams. Dead streams are of no consequence. I think they actually remove the ones that no one is active in. Though I could be mistaken.

Private streams are also another story. Not exactly the same as a stream with 70+ followers. Private streams tend to have far fewer active followers. So that is also of no consequence.

If we have 4th graders openly stating their age, surely those users can be removed from the site. If we wait on the parents to wake up and pay attention to their kid's activity we should definitely not hold our breath. We all know how the phone is the new parent these days. Sadly.

Maybe something similar to what Boma proposed but instead of time limit for new posts, the owner has to verify they are still active once a month.
If an owner deletes their account, any stream where they are the only owner and only mod get deleted too. Streams where there are other mods would automatically make one of the mods the new owner.

The problem is proving they are underage. Simply saying you are could be construed as a joke. While the site’s requirement is for people to be of a certain age, there is still no verification.

My oldest granddaughter is going to be 10 next month. You better believe both her mother and when she is with us, know what sites she is on. The technology is there. You can’t expect sites to spend the resources protecting children. That is and always has been the parent’s responsibility.

Anyway, nice seeing you again!

True. Though often it's pretty easy to spot the really young people thanks to their ways of communicating.

Nice seeing you as well.

No way, this dormant 4yrs until recently revived as a result of Olympian's list is THE greatest stream ever. So great, I can't add anything to it without bringing it down several notches.

I’m still unclear on how to use
Mod authority.

I have a different problem tho. There are people who just join my streams & do nothing in it. When it's inactive & I want to delete it, I can't because there are more than 10 people following the stream, but they aren't even active! Now i'm stuck with two inactive streams that I want to delete, but I can't!

Yep. A LOT of people have complained about this. Not much you can do except get someone else to take over if you don't want it anymore. If you would like to do that ask people in the stream if they would like to take over ownership. Perhaps ask any mods you have there first. When someone agrees to take it over go to settings, and for yourself select "moderator" then select "owner" for the new owner. Then you can choose to click "remove" for yourself after ownership has been changed. That is the only solution there is for freeing yourself of a stream you no longer want.

This is definitely a good idea.

The problem we have to deal with for reassignment of streams is ensuring the new owner will be as good or better at moderating the stream as the previous owner. If a stream has a lot of participation, then it's likely that the previous moderation style had some effect on the success of the stream. You wouldn't want to give away a stream to the first person who clicks "claim stream".

Qualifications for being allowed to claim a stream could include 1) age of account, 2) moderation experience on claimed stream or other streams, and 3) submission and comment reputation, (basically upvotes divided by downvotes).

Sounds great to me. Maybe a downvote counter would be good too? I mean. Most people wanna see how many downvotes they have.

No thanks. They used to have that and honestly it was good to see it go. It sounds like a good idea until you see how the obnoxious users will gather to pile on down votes just to see the down vote total rise and the meme disappear.

Hmmm

Now it would be kinda cool to have it so that only the one receiving the down votes could see them. IF they choose. That would satisfy the curiosity for people who really want to know with out it being a community nuisance.

Right now it appears that all submissions to imgflip.com/m/Green_politics go into a Black Hole.

If there's only one Owner on a stream and they delete their account, maybe the default Stream Moderation settings should automatically revert to "No Approval Required".

Another idea for abandoned Streams is an "Apply for Ownership of this Stream" button that shows up on the Stream homepage if there is no owner. Right now if users find an abandoned Stream, they would have to contact Imgflip via email or Feedback to request that. An "Apply" button might a be simpler way.

Great if there are never any flags to contend with. If people go posting things that should be removed, you can flag all day and with no hope of getting it taken down or looked into at all. What ever they come up with, they should come up with something instead of leaving to submit the infamous feedback form.

Community Moderators have a new button to bring abandoned Streams with no owner back to ownership status.

If you see a Stream you think might be abandoned, let me or OlympianProduct know and we can take a look.

Hypothetically, if someone wanted to email Imgflip to request ownership of an abandoned stream, how would one do that?

I might be able to, or email [email protected]

What about a solution of streams that never gets noticed?
3 ups, 5y
Like and advertisement type of deal? Just make memes about your stream and post it in fun. If people are interested they will come. If not, they will not. My stream doesn't get a ton of traffic, but then I never was going for quantity.

Sorry I misunderstood your question. I have seen streams that haven’t had any new content for weeks and I assumed that was your concern.

But let’s say an active stream (posting at least once a week at a minimum) has it’s sole owner and mod delete their account. I think it’s safe to say Imgflip would know if a deleted account owned a still active stream. That could trigger an invite for an active poster to take over the account.

There seems to be no limit to the number of people wanting to be a mod. I’m sure many would be glad to take ownership as well.

No big deal. It happens.

I do wonder what happens in that case. I was only thinking of people who simply have been gone for months on end without deleting. Never really thought about the ones who delete and leave streams just sitting there.
