The real solution is just to enforce existing usury laws and cap interest at 10 years, and make compound interest illegal. If I could pay the original term of my loan, I would but we hit the 2008 depression so my loan is now $100,000 and growing from compound interest.

If you don't mind, how much was the total loan amount, before all of that was applied?

Problem is he wants to make "free" college too though.. so if people could go without any loan now and you're still way underwater paying debt on yours, that doesn't seem fair..

My son had $80K in loans and made a few payments, went into the hospital for heart surgery and did not work for nearly 2 years and the interest was so big. He made scattered payments now and again and got depressed because no matter how much he paid the interest kept going. When I spoke with him a few days ago, the balance was $123K with interest. What a debacle!

This is just not right. While I don't think student loan debt should, in general, be forgiven, I have to agree with you that the laws need to be changed so something like this can't happen. Even so, under those circumstances, repayment would be a problem, and should qualify, imo, for some sort of relief. That's the kind of forgiveness that is fair and right, and that I think most fair-minded Americans would approve of, as opposed to blanket forgiveness for deadbeats, which is absolutely not the case here.

Ahhh, yes! Those dimwit DRAMAcrats who want to punish people who did it the right way, and paid off their student loan debt (or better yet, worked their ass off while in school at a JOB, to avoid having the debt) are as usual, not being honest with their gullible base about what their plan would actually do.

I am with you on this. If I need surgery and the surgeon's bill is $3000, and I don't have the ability to pay, most would reduce tthe amount owed substantially and give you an interest free abilitity to pay them back at $50 a month allowing you to pay with dignity. Usary on taxes, fines and such is a perversion of justice in most cases
