but during the run-up to the Iraq war,the bush administration expanded the executive war powers.both addingtingon and woo made the case for expanded war powers,secret rendition sites,torture..all without congressional approval.

Obama expanded these powers.that's right.
a constitutional law professor expanded executive powers so he could expand our military engagement up to seven countries,multiple proxy wars and a drone program that killed American citizens.

I hear ya. I sure don't support every action ever undertaken by either Democrats or Republicans in the name of the "war on terror." We stayed in Iraq far too long. We sure as heck stayed in Afghanistan far too long. $2 trillion in treasure and priceless American blood, sweat, and tears, with far too little to show for it. And too often our "friends" in this fight are just as bad as our enemies. To this day, our Middle East policy is hopelessly confused.

But I guess what I'd say is this: It's never too late to grow a spine, and if Congress wants to take this opportunity to assert its authority to block Trump from getting entangled in another major Middle East war this time, then good for them.

A good ol' partisan fight over the use of American force abroad is at least better than the bipartisan lock-step support for overseas military adventures of yesteryear.

When it comes to standing up to the President on foreign policy, Congress is all we got (the judicial branch sure won't step in on questions like this). We have to fight this constitutional battle with the army we have.
